Smartphone vendors shipped 117.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2015 in the country, down four per cent from 123.0 million units over the same time in 2014, according to the latest report released by Strategy Analytics Friday.
For the first quarter of 2016, China's smartphone shipments are set to slide over 20% on quarter but rise less than 5% on year due to a stockpile of inventory left over from the previous quarter, Digitimes Research estimated. Samsung retained its spot as the number one manufacturer, and Huawei recorded shipments of 106.6 million, netting a year-on-year growth of 44.1 percent.
Apple was the only non-Chinese smartphone maker in the top 5. Lenovo, Asus and Huawei are apparently the three other companies on IDC's list of top five tablet vendors a year ago.
Shipments in the October to December quarter rose 5.7% to 399.5 million units.
Canalys has claimed that Xiaomi had 19 percent share of units in the Q4 2015 while Huawei was slightly behind with 15.7 percent share of units in the same quarter. As for the whole year, the numbers are just as dire.
As for the individual companies, Apple and Samsung continue to lead the overall market, although, with fast-diminishing market shares.
This will be news to Apple which saw its sales flatten. That represents a loss of nearly 4 percentage points of market share, from 28.1 percent to 24.5 percent.
Another Chinese brand, OPPO, pushed into the fifth spot on China's rankings as the company shipped 10.8 million smartphones, up from 9.6 million units.
For bigger players like Samsung, competing in foreign territories like China where homegrown companies there have gotten more and more traction, the news doesn't get any better.
Samsung faces increasing pressure from US-based Apple in the high-end smart phone market and from Chinese firms such as Xiaomi and Huawei when it comes to mid or low-cost handsets, according to IDC.
