Samsung has quickly established a footing for itself in the VR market with the Gear VR. This relatively cheap virtual reality headset provides you with a good and affordable entry point to the world of VR as long as you have a compatible Samsung smartphone. However, the company may not limit its VR ambitions to smartphones only. It's open to expanding its VR business beyond that.
At a press briefing in Seoul, Koo Yun-mo of Samsung's mobile division said that initially the idea of pushing its VR business was to increase the competitiveness of smartphones. "If the opportunity presents itself, we may expand it to other areas, besides just increasing smartphone competitiveness," Yun-mo said.
Currently, Samsung's priority is to build a strong ecosystem for virtual reality by pushing it with its smartphones to ultimately create a robust platform. Then it can be expanded to other areas like classrooms where teachers can use it to display landmarks, Google is already doing something similar, VR may even be used to treat acrophobia by simulating low altitudes progressing to higher altitudes.
Samsung is likely to talk more about its virtual reality ambitions at the event on February 21st where it's going to unveil the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Reports suggest that those who pre-order the new flagships will receive a unit of the Gear VR headset for free.
