Samsung 4K Smartphone Display is geared towards VR

While most manufacturers are still adapting to 2K or QHD panels for their smartphones and slates, Samsung is thinking ahead. A Samsung 4K smartphone display was shown off this week, and it could be just what the doctor ordered if you dig mobile VR.

The Display Week conference was held in San Francisco this week, and while there was plenty of cool tech on display (pun intended), Samsung unveiled a new prototype that will be of interest to VR gamers. If you've already dipped your toes into the wild waters of VR, you have probably noticed something called the "Screen Door" effect. It's not fun and can take away from the experience to a degree on some headsets although that shouldn't be an issue for the new Samsung 4K smartphone display.

The new Samsung 4K smartphone display is of the 5.5-inch variety but has a pixel density or PPI of 806. That's due to the whopping 3,840 x 2,160 resolution of the panel, which smokes the current top-tier panel from Samsung which has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 and a pixel density of 534. That's the display you'll find on the current Samsung Galaxy S7 and its edged brethren, which looks quite nice on the Gear VR, but still has a noticeable screen door effect. That prototype panel is also better than what you'll currently find in the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift.

Given all the flexible display rumors we've seen not pan out over the past few years, it could be a while before we see the new Samsung 4K smartphone display in a consumer product. They may not be the first company to bring one to market, but you can bet the farm their panels will be extremely popular whenever they do arrive.
