Huawei takes on Samsung with its own smartphone VR headset

Huawei takes on Samsung with its own smartphone VR headset

Huawei announced its entry into the world of mobile virtual reality today with multiple versions of a Gear VR-like headset simply called "Huawei VR" Engadget reports.

We knew it was coming sooner or later; the deluge of smartphone-powered virtual reality headsets entering the market, following in the footsteps of Samsung's Gear VR. It'll be like watching a 130in TV from about 2m away, so enough to fill most of your vision. With the Samsung Gear VR price being around $100, the Huawei VR headset price will most likely be lower than that, our sources telling us to expect an $80 price tag.

Last week, Huawei showed off its latest P9 and P9 Plus smartphones in London.

When you think about VR headsets, there are three names that probably come to mind: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Samsung Gear VR. The handset sits inside the Huawei VR headset, keeping your hands free. The headset supports spatial audio through the MilkVR app if you use headphones with it.

Samsung Milk VR hit the Play Store on April 11. A smartphone is placed inside the headset to act as its display and the two are connected together with a USB-C cable. Content has already been lined up for the launch, according to the announcement: 4,000 free movies, more than 40 free games and a number of panoramic images and virtual tours. The headset features a 95-degree field of view and also contains an anti-blue light filter to make it easier on your eyes. This includes what Huawei claims is the first ever 360-degree sound field system. It'll also come with adjustable lenses, volume buttons, a back button, and a touch pad. Compared to the Quad HD resolutions of the Galaxy S6/S7 and LG G5, this leaves us wondering just how sharp the Huawei VR experience will be.

Why do Android fanboys hate admitting that Samsung copied Apple?

It's impossible to cover the mobile market without diving into the good ol' "iOS vs. Android" debate from time to time. These are the two biggest mobile platforms on the planet, so they're constantly being compared. Likewise, Samsung and Apple are the world's top two smartphone vendors, so their phones are constantly pitted against each other as well. Of course, there's another reason Apple and Samsung are often mentioned in the same breath: after entering the market, Samsung quickly grew to become the top mobile device maker on the planet thanks in large part to Apple. First, Samsung did everything it possibly could to copy Apple's iPhone and iPad. Then, it spent billions upon billions of dollars belittling Apple products in TV, online, and print advertising. Samsung spent years positioning its own devices as the cool alternative to Apple's iPhone, and its efforts paid off big time. Even now, Samsung continues to copy Apple all the time acro
