Smartphone manufacturers have adopted AMOLED displays in smartphones, with Samsung incorporating Super AMOLED displays in its devices since a considerably long period. However, with the announcement of OnePlus 3, we've come across a term that's not common in smartphone displays at all; Optic AMOLED displays. What is this sort of display and how does it differ from a Super AMOLED display? Let us find out shall we.
On OnePlus 3's homepage, the following quote has been stated explaining what exactly an Optic AMOLED display is:
"Our stunning 5.5" Optic AMOLED display produces colors that are more vivid and true-to-life than ever before. A series of custom-engineered gamma corrections create a more natural viewing experience, while a dual-polarizing layer ensures ideal clarity, even in the brightest sunlight. The end result? Deep blacks, bright whites, and authentic color reproduction – all at a fraction of the power consumption. It's the smarter smartphone display."
OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei took to Reddit AMA to answer the queries regarding the differentiation between Optic AMOLED displays and regular displays. His reply was as follows:
"We've taken Super AMOLED and added our take on contrast and color temperature, to try and bring it more true to life. In addition, we've designed its performance profile to work well when outdoors in bright conditions."
In short, what Pei is trying to tell us that an Optic AMOLED is a variant of a Super AMOLED display and the company has had to adjust the color tone of the display through software changes that produces a result that is near similar to what you see in Super AMOLED displays. What this means is that the display is extremely vibrant and will appear thoroughly bright when you're using in outside in broad daylight. Additionally, the company focuses on battery life as well through this particular display type.
One other way how OnePlus has managed to make OnePlus 3 deliver more battery life is through its resolution. Where you see devices like Galaxy S7 edge, which boast resolutions of 1440p and display type of Super AMOLED (Samsung's smartphone displays on the Galaxy S7 are regarded as the best in the world right now), you see crisp detail, but that does not translate into better battery life.
With a OnePlus 3, where the resolution has been retained at 1080p, the experience is expected to be flawless and delivers sufficient battery life to the user. Do you think this is the most accurate description of an Optic AMOLED display? Let us know your thoughts right away.
