Samsung and Apple should be afraid, very afraid, according to Huawei director Richard Yu, as the Chinese technology company aims to overtake the two biggest smartphone providers within the next 5 years.
We want to be the number-one smartphone maker in the world. "It's a long distance race, and we have the patience", said Yu.
The Huawei CEO has also announced that the company might start selling smartphones through United States carriers, but nothing is definitive at this point. Within the first-quarter, Huawei's smartphone sales amount increased 59% from the year previously, while Samsung's revenue stayed almost smooth and Apple's revenue dropped 14%, based on study company Gartner Inc. On the other hand, Samsung's sales were nearly stagnant, and Apple sales even dropped by 14 percent.
With a 59% YoY growth in sales volume - compared to Samsung's flat one and Apple's 14% decrease - Huawei now sits with a market share of 8.3%, with Samsung and Apple at 23% and 15% respectively.
Huawei has also been trying new things as seen by its introduction of the high-end phones. Huawei has introduced quite a few interesting phones this year, including their P9 and P9 Plus flagships, and there's much more to come before the end of 2016. "If you want to be the leading vendor you have to lead in the high-end", he told WSJ.
Huawei is planning to launch the smartphone this fall, and the CEO has mentioned that the company intends to continue the partnership with Leica for the next five years. He also said the company was thinking of entering the virtual reality platform. If premium phone makers adopt the new chip for their smartphones, it is possible that a large number of VR-capable smartphones will vie for attention either later this year or by next year. In the USA, however, the company is still struggling to make an impact.
