Samsungâ€™s new Galaxy S8 Active is the â€œtoughest Galaxy smartphone yetâ€

One of the few criticisms Samsung had to face with the Galaxy S8 was its incredibly fragile build. To address that concern specifically, the company has today announced the significantly more rugged – Galaxy S8 Active. As the name suggests, the handset is made for the adventurers who don't spend their time in ideal environments.

Samsung calls its new phone the "toughest Galaxy smartphone yet". However, in the process, they had to give up the lineup's headlining feature – the edge-to-edge panel up front. The military-grade exterior is shock, shatter, water, and dust resistant and can withstand almost any kind of challenge. It features a metal frame and an extra bumper for shielding it against intense hits. In addition to that, the back comes with a tough texture for a secure grip.

The other big change is the presence of a substantially larger 4,000mAh battery. Unfortunately, it's non-removable. On than that, though, the Galaxy S8 Active inherits every other spec from its sibling including the company's virtual assistant – Bixby.

There's a 5.8-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 and there's no 6.2-inch plus variant. Under the hood, there's a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4 gigs of RAM, and 64GB of storage. It also packs a 12-megapixel rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Sadly, the fingerprint sensor is still located at that inconveninet position.

The Galaxy S8 Active will be exclusively available in two colors – Meteor Gray or Titanium Gold from AT&T stores from this month's 11th at $28.34 for 30 months.
