Kantar: Samsung Top Smartphone Maker in US but iPhone 7 Remained the Best Selling Handset

As per Kantar, Apple's market share rose to 34 percent in the US for a three-month period ending in May. Samsung's gain was higher than that of Apple as its market share increased to 36.2 percent from 32.9 percent.

Samsung's rise can be attributed to the launch of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ which have met with positive reviews from all around. Despite the market share increase though, Samsung's market share in the US actually dwindled by 1.1 percent when compared to the same time frame a year ago. The bounce in market share was less than what "would be expected from a full product redesign" as per Kantar's Global Business Unit Director Dominic Sunnebo.

In terms of hot selling smartphones, despite Apple not being at the top, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus continued to occupy the top two spots in terms of smartphone sales. Surprisingly, the Galaxy S7 came in third, with the Galaxy S8 coming in fourth. LG's flagship, the G6, had minimal impact and was ranked 13th in the smartphone sales list with a market share of 1.3 percent.

In China, a key market for Apple, the company's market share declined by only 0.4 percent to 19.2 percent when compared to a year ago. However, it's still an improvement from the 16.2 percent market share the company had for the period ending April 2017. Samsung was nowhere to be found in China, with Huawei dominating the top spot with a market share of 28.3 percent. Xiaomi also managed to increase its market share in the country thanks to the strong performance of the Redmi Note 4X.

In Europe, Android dominates the smartphone market with a market share of 79.5 percent — an increase of 2.8 percent from a year ago. This was due to the strong performance of Samsung's mid-range devices in France, with Huawei also doing good in the EU.

Apple's market share in the US is only going to dwindle until late September when the company launches its new iPhone lineup. With the iPhone 8 launching with a plethora of new features and the hype surrounding it, the company's market share in the US is probably going to reach a new peak in December-January.

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 (S820) Review

This year has been difficult for smartphones, which is a bit of a paradox when you consider just how much better things have gotten compared to last year. With Snapdragon 820, 650, 652, and 625 we've finally moved past the shadow of the Snapdragon 810, 808, and 617/615. While there were Android devices that shipped with the Exynos 7420, they were often paired with a modem that was not necessarily the most power efficient. Despite all of this, there seems to be a general disappointment with smartphones. People are increasingly finding it hard to justify phones like the HTC 10 or Galaxy S7 with competition from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and even Apple with their iPhone SE. In this context the Galaxy Note7 brings much of the flavor of the Galaxy S7 edge, but blends it with the S-Pen of the Note line and a few new features like the iris scanner. If you were paying attention to the industry with the launch of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note5, it's very much more of the same rather than the m
