LG V30 hands-on: Samsung should be worried

LG finally did it: it's created a phone that feels as premium as anything Samsung has to offer. The V30 might be the company's first phone that really captures mainstream recognition. At least, that's how I feel after spending over a week with a pre-production version of the device. We've known what the V30 will look like for months thanks to a massive amount of leaks and LG's incessant teasing. That didn't stop me from being impressed when I first saw it in person and held it in my hands. LG's taken what it learned from the G6, which kicked off 2017's wonderful bezel-killing trend, and cranked it up a notch. The V30 has one of my favorite takes on small bezels so far. The top and bottom bezels are even smaller than on the G6, S8, or Note 8 – let alone any other devices. There's no potentially-distracting notch like on the Essential phone or the upcoming iPhone 8. The side bezels are a little thicker than on Sa

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 is one of the most expensive phones ever

I can't lie, Samsung's new Galaxy Note 8 looks and feels amazing. The Korean electronic giant pulled out all the stops for new phone. It has a large bezel-less display, impressive dual cameras, powerful performance, all day battery life, and S Pen stylus features that are actually useful. But all of these nice things don't come cheap. In fact, the Note 8 is Samsung's most expensive phone ever and costs significantly more than the iPhone 7 Plus. Anyone who wants to purchase it should probably double-check their bank account before they actually click the checkout button. Carrier pricing is finally starting to trickle in, and it looks like the Note 8 will cost anywhere between $900 to $960. Yikes! For comparison, the iPhone 7 Plus starts at $770.  The Note 8 goes up for pre-order in the U.S. on Thursday, Aug. 24 and is set to start shipping on Sept. 15. All of the major U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular will sell

What We Know So Far about New iPhone, Galaxy and Pixel Phones

With the dog days of summer now past, the season bringing a new generation of flagship smartphones is rapidly approaching. And the coming season promises to be a big one, with the arrival of Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone, Google's new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and the just-unveiled Samsung Galaxy Note 8. While new iPhones are typically launched in September, design and supply issues are expected to delay the next star in Apple's lineup until later this year. However, a French technology site reported yesterday that the next iPhone, likely to be named the iPhone Edition rather than the iPhone 8, could debut on Sept. 12, with the device hitting the market on Sept. 22. Meanwhile, Google appears set to unveil its second-generation Pixel smartphones on Oct. 5, according to a leak revealed on Twitter yesterday by mobile tech writer Evan Blass. The new handsets will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 836 systems-on-chip, according to Blass. New Multi-Window Mode on Galax

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 phone aims to rebuild consumer trust

Technology 0  Updated at 9:51 am, August 23rd, 2017 By: Kaya Yurieff, CNN We Matched (CNN Money) — Samsung is breathing new life into its Note smartphone brand nearly one year after its massive recalling of fire-prone phones. The South Korean tech giant revealed the Galaxy Note 8 at an event in New York on Wednesday. The Note 8 has many of the same features that already exist on Samsung's phones like the Galaxy S8 and S8+. It touts an infinity screen, no physical home button and a finger print scanner on the back of the device. Although the Note 8 has some of its own unique features — especially when it comes to the camera and the stylus — this is not a revolutionary iteration. It's clear the company wants to get this latest version right; rather than throw new features against the wall to see what sticks. It's also working hard to regain consumer trust. This is the first smartphone in the Note series since Samsung's exploding Note 7 battery deba

CAMERA SHOOTOUT: The Essential Phone puts up a surprisingly good fight, but Samsung's Galaxy S8 still holds the throne

Antonio Villas-Boas/Business Insider It might seem unfair to pit the recently launched Essential Phone against a smartphone behemoth like Samsung, which for two years running has won accolades for the best camera in a smartphone, even surpassing the last two iPhone cameras. And yet the Essential Phone is a $700 Android device with top-of-the-line specs, which means it's priced and designed to compete with the Galaxy S8. So, after tossing its hat into the ring, the Essential Phone must be tested against even the battle-hardened veteran.  I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by the Essential Phone's camera performance. Startups don't tend to produce good smartphone cameras on the first try, as seen with the first few OnePlus phones. But it seems like Essential has already found its footing with its first-ever device.  Check out how the Essential Phone fares against the undisputed champion of the smartphone cameras, the Samsung Galaxy S8: View As: One Page Sli

1,000 Dutch schoolkids get a free smartphone to fight isolation

One thousand kids in the Dutch city of The Hague are getting a free smartphone courtesy of T-Mobile, Samsung, and the municipality. Since more and more services – announcements, class schedules, etc – at high schools are moving online, kids from low-income families who can't afford smartphone are being left behind. The first 250 kids, who are starting high school next week, will be receiving their brand new smartphone from Dutch state secretary for education, Jetta Kleinsma. In a press release she states that: "All children should be able to participate. That's why the government has reserved extra money so children from low-income families can also do sports, make music, dance, and participate in activities at school. Participating in this day and age also means participating online and on mobile." At the ceremony where the high schoolers get their new Samsung Xcover 4's, they'll also be getting a probably very awkward

Galaxy Note 8 Release Date: Samsung To Bundle Note 8 With Gear 360, Dex Dock

Samsung electronics will officially unveil its highly anticipated oversized smartphone — the Galaxy Note 8 — on Wednesday, August 23 in New York. The Note 8 will almost certainly be the South Korean's highest-end flagship handset and to a certain degree because the previous iteration had a huge proneness to explode into flames. You'll be able to watch the "Samsung Unpacked" event live at 8 A.M. PT, right here at Velvetiere. For a while after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, the fortune of Samsung's phablet smartphone line was undetermined. It soon became quite clear that Samsung electronics isn't assassinating the brand name. Well all know that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23rd, and according to notoriously reputable smartphone leaker Evan Blass (evleaks), the supersized smartphone will be available as early as September 15th. Additionally, consumers will be able to pre-order the Galaxy Note 8 on August 24th, just a day after the t

Samsung, Foxconn to back cable-free phone tech

A startup backed by Tony Fadell, one of the fathers of the Apple iPod, plans to announce Wednesday it is working with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Foxconn parent Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd and others on a new way for mobile phones to transfer large amounts of data without using wires or WiFi connections. Chief Executive Eric Almgren said his Campbell, Calif.-based company called Keyssa has raised more than $100 million from Fadell and the venture arms of Samsung and Intel Corp, among others. The company's "kiss" technology allows two computing devices to be held near each other and transfer large files such as movies in just a few seconds. The goal is to remove the need for cumbersome and bulky cable connectors inside devices like phones and laptops, which are growing ever-lighter and thinner. If Keyssa is successful, the wireless data transfer technique could eventually be available in a wide range of devices. Keyssa announced last October, together with In

Samsung is Recalling Galaxy Note 4 Smartphones in the US

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has just recalled 10,000+ Galaxy Note 4 handsets for issues related to the battery. If that sounds familiar then it's because of the fact that about year ago, something similar happened with the Galaxy Note 7. While this doesn't sound good for Samsung initially, a little more probe into the matter reveals that Samsung is actually not at fault for this one. It seems that some AT&T refurbished Galaxy Note 4 smartphones contained batteries in them that are prone to overheating. As the batteries were not made or supplied by Samsung, they are off the hook for this one. In fact, the heating batteries are counterfeit units which made their way into some of the AT&T refurbished Galaxy Note 4 devices through unknown means. As of now, there have been no reports of fire, explosion, damage or injury. The Galaxy Note 7 disaster has been one of Samsung's biggest messes recently, but they have come out of that much

Samsung’s surprisingly decent mobile browser is now available as a Google Chrome alternative

Samsung's mobile browser has previously been available primarily for Samsung phones (with the exception of a few other devices like the Pixel and Pixel XL) and while the main version of the app will remain this way, the beta version of the Samsung Internet Browser can now be downloaded for use on Android phone running 5.0 Lollipop or later… This new device support comes as part of the version 6.2 update, and in addition to this, Samsung has also updated its browser to support a night mode for browsing at night, a high contrast setting that makes web pages easier to see, and the ability to sync your bookmarks across multiple devices. Along with these features added in v6.2, Samsung's mobile browser also offers a clean user interface, fast performance, third-party extensions, built-in ad-blocking, support for 360-degree videos, and quite a bit more. There's a surprising amount of stuff here to play with, and in all honesty, Samsung's browser could be used as a l

Kantar: Samsung Top Smartphone Maker in US but iPhone 7 Remained the Best Selling Handset

Posted by Rajesh Pandey on Aug 09, 2017 | No Comments As per Kantar, Apple's market share rose to 34 percent in the US for a three-month period ending in May. Samsung's gain was higher than that of Apple as its market share increased to 36.2 percent from 32.9 percent. Samsung's rise can be attributed to the launch of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ which have met with positive reviews from all around. Despite the market share increase though, Samsung's market share in the US actually dwindled by 1.1 percent when compared to the same time frame a year ago. The bounce in market share was less than what "would be expected from a full product redesign" as per Kantar's Global Business Unit Director Dominic Sunnebo. In terms of hot selling smartphones, despite Apple not being at the top, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus continued to occupy the top two spots in terms of smartphone sales. Surprisingly, the Galaxy S7 came in third, with the Galaxy S8 comi

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Debuts as a Rugged and Durable Android Smartphone

South Korean electronic and smart appliance technology manufacturer Samsung Electronics officially unveiled the newest member of the company's latest Galaxy S8 flagship Android-powered smartphone line up. Designed from the offset as a rugged and durable mobile phone, the Galaxy S8 Active is now available for pre-order at AT&T in the United States and it ships with a premium metal frame featuring a rugged structure that should resist to shocks, shatter, water, and dust. Available in Meteor Gray and Gold variants, Galaxy S8 Active will be exclusively available from AT&T for a limited time. "Our new Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is designed with tested durability and strength to address the needs of consumers who need a more rugged device for their lifestyle," said Tim Baxter, President and CEO, Samsung Electronics North America. "We are thrilled to introduce the fifth-generation Galaxy Active, which offers the best of Galaxy features in a tougher package."

Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 Active is the “toughest Galaxy smartphone yet”

One of the few criticisms Samsung had to face with the Galaxy S8 was its incredibly fragile build. To address that concern specifically, the company has today announced the significantly more rugged – Galaxy S8 Active. As the name suggests, the handset is made for the adventurers who don't spend their time in ideal environments. Samsung calls its new phone the "toughest Galaxy smartphone yet". However, in the process, they had to give up the lineup's headlining feature – the edge-to-edge panel up front. The military-grade exterior is shock, shatter, water, and dust resistant and can withstand almost any kind of challenge. It features a metal frame and an extra bumper for shielding it against intense hits. In addition to that, the back comes with a tough texture for a secure grip. The other big change is the presence of a substantially larger 4,000mAh battery. Unfortunately, it's non-removable. On than that, though, the Galaxy S8 Active inherits every oth

Samsung announces Rose Pink Galaxy S8+ with Photos, Pricing

After weeks of rumors swirling, Samsung has announced the release of the latest color version of its Samsung Galaxy S8+ 64GB model, Rose Pink. Unfortunately, this pink smartphone is only having a limited release in select regions like Taiwan and South Korea, which started last June 30, for around $900 price (or around PhP 46,000 in the PH). Although there hasn't been any official announcements yet, we're all crossing our fingers that Samsung will have a wider release in the coming months and include the Philippines. More pink phones and reviews here This new version of the phone doesn't really have any new features aside from its color. It still has its 6.2-inch Infinity Display, sleek bezel-less design, 4GB of RAM,  Exynos 8895 processor, 12MP rear camera and 8MP front-facing camera, and a 3500 mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy S8+ rose pink close up photo In a short announcement posted on its website, Samsung said that this new c

Samsung Pay is now available on a wide range of Samsung smartphones, enabling consumers to make offline payments without the need for a physical Card. With the support of Samsung Pay, the bank expects a 10- 20 times growth in the volume of payments. Samsung Pay works on 2.5 million PoS card machines across the country through its magnetic secure transmission (MST) technology. Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) review

Introduction Segmentation at its finest in the Samsung smartphone lineup. That's how we have the entire alphabet of series with a handful of models in each of them. Near the bottom of the food chain, which is in no way sorted alphabetically the hugely successful J series is the place to get good value for money and the Galaxy J5 (2017) is ready to oblige. At 5.2 inches of screen diagonal, the Galaxy J5 (2017) fits between the 5-inch J3 (2017) and the 5.5-inch J7 (2017), and from then on it's some careful balancing between those two extremes to assemble a J5 that is that much better than the J3 without being as good as the J7. Perhaps most importantly, the J5 for this year gets the Exynos 7870 SoC - a proper 14nm chip with an octa-core CPU, as opposed to the quad-core Snapdragon 410 that powers the J5 (2016). With only the J7 treated to full-HD, the J5 has a 720p screen - which is acceptable considering the smaller diagonal. Plus, the J7 (2016)'s sales figures didn&
