Samsung unveils brand new Galaxy 8 smartphone, hoping it only blows up with good feedback

Please enable Javascript to watch this video NEW YORK — After going back to the drawing board, Samsung has a new arrival just for you: it's a whole new Galaxy! The company rolled out its new smartphone to enthusiastic fans in New York earlier in the week. "I give you the Galaxy S8 and S8+," Samsung's Mobile Communications Business President DJ Koh announced. The new Galaxy 8 small size is 5.8 inches while the larger model is a gargantuan 6.2 inches. For security, it even has an iris scanner so you can use your eyeballs to access the phone...along with the fingerprint scanner, too. And giving Siri a run for her money, Samsung has its own virtual assistant named Bixby. Also, the Galaxy 8 is water-tight, so it has no problem operating underwater. "The beginning of a new way to experience the world," Koh said. Of course, Samsung is hoping this Galaxy only blows up in sales — not in real life! "As you all know, it has been a challeng

What's in Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones?

Samsung's new Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones look beautiful, and are loaded with new features that could make an upgrade worthwhile. The handsets are superfast and 4K capable, and also herald the arrival of new technologies like Bluetooth 5 and LTE gigabit modems. We take a look inside the handsets and see how they have improved from the Samsung Galaxy S7. Screen size is bigger The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch screen, while the S8+ has a 6.2-inch screen, which are larger than the 5.5-inch S7 and the 5.7-inch Note 7. The screen resolution is 2960 x 1440 pixels, a slight uptick from S7's 2560 x 1440-pixel screen. Samsung was able to increase the S8 screen size by cutting the home button, and also adding to the height. The screen area now constitutes 83 percent of the S8 front surfaces. Thinner At 155 grams, the S8 is two grams lighter than the S7. The S8 is 8 millimeters thick, while the S7 is 7.9 millimeters thick. The S8+ is 8.1 millimeters thick. Beefier processors

Samsung Opens Door to Re-Selling Note 7s as Refurbished Phones

A woman checks her Samsung Electronics Co. Galaxy Note 7 smartphone at a Samsung kiosk providing rental phones for users of the Note 7 at Incheon International Airport in Incheon, South Korea, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016. In what may be the first Note 7 related class-action lawsuit filed in South Korea, 527 smartphone buyers are demanding Samsung Electronics Co. pay each plaintiff about 500,000 won (about $440) for time and effort lost when the phones were first recalled and then scrapped amid reports devices were heating up and catching on fire. Photographer: SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg More Samsung Electronics Co. has detailed its plans for the millions of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones it pulled off shelves when some caught fire last year, including recycling materials and potentially letting customers use them as refurbished devices. Samsung has collected 97 percent of its Note 7 smartphones and issued a software code that blocks any device in circulation from being recharged at all. I

Samsung announces plan to refurbish and resell some Note7s that didn't explode

Don't be alarmed if you happen to see someone using a Galaxy Note7 over the summer. Ahead of this week's Galaxy S8 unveiling, Samsung has announced a three-point program for recycling of its failed phablets, and some of them will eventually make their way back into consumers' hands. The press release doesn't specify how many of the phones will be returned to the wild, but Samsung confirms it will be using some returned devices as "refurbished phones or rental phones." Samsung offers a leasing program that lets you upgrade to a new device after a year of payments, but Samsung doesn't say whether it would be selling refurbished Note7s to these customers. It specifies that "applicability is dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand. The markets and release dates will be determined accordingly." It's unclear how this plan would affect the Note7's U.S. flight ban, w

Five months later, Samsung is finally about to kill every remaining Note 7 phone

When it was released last fall, Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was the hottest Android phone the world had ever seen. Unfortunately though, the Galaxy Note 7 was literally the hottest Android phone the world had ever seen. A poor battery design caused dozens of phones to explode while being charged — and in some cases, while unplugged and in use — causing property damage and even injuring some users in the process. As a result, Samsung was forced to issue an unprecedented global recall, asking everyone around the world who purchased the phone to return or exchange it as soon as possible. Most of the potentially destructive smartphones have been collected by now. Since the phone was so impressive, however, a small percentage of holdouts have refused to give up their precious Note 7 handsets. We're not sure why Samsung waited as long as it did, but the company is finally taking its final step in ensuring that the Note 7 cannot do anymore damage. According to South Korean news si

Coral Blue Samsung Galaxy S8 & the S8 Plus poses for a photo

We have already seen a ton of leaks on the Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus, and yes, we know that most of you are tired of being revealed everything about the smartphone, but we can't help but report on the existence of this Coral Blue color variant of the smartphones. As we saw earlier, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus, both will be launching in a bunch of colors like Black Sky, Orchid Grey, and Arctic Silver. There is also a violet color variant circulating the internet, but this Coral Blue was nowhere to be seen. Now when you take a look at the image below, you might not be totally convinced of the fact that it is indeed a coral blue color since we don't have any images of the back of the device in this color. However, upon close inspection, it is quite easy to spot the Blue color around the edges of the smartphone. Now, this Blue looks very similar to what we saw with the Galaxy S7 Edge previously when it got the Coral Blue treatment. And if you are convinced already,

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 – What’s Inside The Box

The Samsung line of smartphones will get a an uplift with two new devices, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8, and these two are being counted upon to reclaim the sheen Samsung lost with last year's debacle that was the Note 7. Even today, nearly half a year after the Samsung S7 was launched, many airports still do not allow passengers with these latter devices to board aircraft. The reason is simple: the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was prone to explosions and fires. While the battery manufacturer were to blame for the debacle, many experts and tech enthusiasts suggest that the brand name of Samsung had been dealt an irreparable blow. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be one of the best devices to ship this year. The Note 8 will come with enormously powerful hardware which will be at par with the best devices. The Galaxy S8 is, like we have said before, a very powerful phone. The new S8 will come with the next-generation of VR and graphics. We expect the new Galaxy Note 8 to

The not-so-secret weapon in Samsung flagships

The Samsung Galaxy S7 was, and is still considered a great smartphone. It's actually been one of my daily drivers for the last year, which is a testament given how frequently I go through phones. The way I look at it, Samsung did set the bar in what we want, a phone that looks premium, that's water resistant, features wireless charging, and takes amazing photos and videos. While many phones are still playing catch up, at least matching to what the Samsung Galaxy S7 has brought to the table, there's still a not-so-secret weapon that the Galaxy S8 will surely have that no other phones can come close to offering. And that's none other than Samsung Pay. Let that sink in just a bit, mainly because it's arguably something that you wouldn't think about, especially given all the other high-tech goodies we anticipate Samsung's upcoming flagship to package. The rumors and leaks have given us several sneak peeks, but Samsung Pay isn't something new. In fact,

Jay Y. Lee's Troublesome Ascension to the Top of Samsung

Samsung feels synonymous with South Korea. The revenue of the chaebol—family-run business—is equal to about 25 percent of the country's GDP; it's a vital cog in the Korean economy. So when its vice chairman Lee Jae-yong, often referred to as Jay Y. Lee by the English-speaking press, was arrested for Samsung's involvement in a clandestine corruption scandal that ensnared President Park, it rocked the conglomerate. Samsung, it appeared, was not so untouchable in its homeland after all. Park was ultimately impeached but the case has also shined a big spotlight on how Samsung is run by the Lee family, which has handed down the reins of power from generation to generation. His father, Lee Kun-hee, is the actual chairman of the Samsung Group but the 75-year-old magnate suffered a heart attack in 2014 that has left him indisposed and his son Jay Y. Lee as effectively the head of the group. Lee Kun-hee himself has been dogged by controversy; he resigned in 2008 over a tax e

Meet Bixby, Samsung's Personal Assistant That Doesn't Pretend To Be Alexa

Bixby, would be deeply integrated into apps, should also be able to manage payments, control native apps or even identify objects and text through the camera ... Samsung's virtual assistant Bixby has been rumored for a while, and now the company has officially announced it. Samsung finished 2016 as the largest smartphone maker globally, although Apple edged ahead of it in the fourth quarter, according to IDC. Bixby enters a crowded field of digital assistants powered by artificial intelligence that includes Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana and Amazon's Alexa. Samsung plans to release a tool (in SDK) to allow third-party developers to make their applications and services Bixby-enabled easily. According to Samsung, users can launch Bixby in any app that is compatible with it and ask for help. Samsung has had voice assistants before, and if you owned a previous Samsung device you probably didn't use them, but this one is different, says the K

Samsung Bixby wants to guide you through the Galaxy

by Wayne Manion — 12:32 PM on March 20, 2017 Smartphones and connected devices keep adding new capabilities, and Samsung thinks users might need some help keeping up. The company says its Bixby AI assistant is designed to step in and help users in a way that's fundamentally different from the approach taken by Amazon, Apple, and Google. Bixby is the product of Samsung's acquisition of Viv Labs last year. InJong Rhee, Samsung's Executive VP, head of R&D and Software and Services Samsung says that Bixby excels in the areas of completeness, context awareness, and cognitive tolerance. Completeness refers to Bixby's deeper integration into enabled applications, meaning that Samsung expects Bixby-enabled apps to support voice commands for nearly everything that can be normally accessed through the touch interface. The company says that Bixby can be used along with the touch interface when the user performs complex tasks, too. Meanwhile, cognitive tolerance boils

BlackBerry readies a more secure version of the Samsung Galaxy S7

Secusmart, the BlackBerry subsidiary that secures the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's smartphone, will roll out a version of its SecuSuite security software compatible with Samsung Electronics' Knox platform later this year. That means that organizations looking for smartphones offering government-grade security will be able to buy the Samsung Galaxy S7 or, soon, the S8 rather than the now-discontinued BlackBerry OS smartphones like the one Merkel uses. In addition to encrypting communications and data stored on the device, the new SecuSuite also secures voice calls using the SNS standard set by Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Organizational app traffic is passed through an IPsec VPN, while data from personal apps can go straight to the internet. Encrypted voice calls go through a different gateway, not the VPN. When it goes on sale, likely around July, an S7 running SecuSuite for Samsung Knox will cost around €1900, said BlackBerry Secu

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Scores 205,284 In Antutu; Demolishes Previous Leader, Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus

After features and specifications, it's time for benchmarks to leak for Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The pair have collectively been the part of three leaks so far. These paint a moderately impressive picture. Samsung's Exynos lineup of processors is set to dominate the Snapdragon once again. Today, we've got yet another benchmark leak for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Take a look below to find out more. Samsung's got a lot to make up for this month. The Korean manufacturer has not only dropped the ball, but lost it as well. The company failed miserably with the Galaxy Note 7. Its de-facto head is facing corruption charges from the South Korean government. A big win is all that Samsung needs to inject confidence into shareholders, employees and fans. With the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the company seems set to achieve all this. Today's Antutu score further confirms that Samsung's upcoming smartphone will set the new bar for performance. The vide

Samsung Galaxy S8 Release Date - This amazing new feature puts all other phones to shame

GETTY/SAMSUNG SAMSUNG SHOCK: The Galaxy S8 will reportedly play host to this innovative new feature The Samsung Galaxy S8 is now just days away from being formally unveiled. That hasn't stopped the leaks flowing, however, with latest reports focussing on the upcoming phone's camera. While it's widely expected that the S8 will play host to the same 12-megapixel camera as last year's Galaxy S7, it appears that doesn't tell the whole story. Instead, it's now been claimed that the iPhone rival will play host to impressive new video recording abilities. Samsung might finally drop their foldable smartphone this year

The tech world's rumour mill has been running wild with speculation for several years now with talk of a foldable smartphone from South Korean electronics giants Samsung.  The technology firm is believed to have been working on a smartphone that can be folded in half, but up until now there has been little sign of it actually coming to fruition. However, according a report from Korean news agency ETNnews, it might finally be unveiled to the public later this year. One of the only glimpses we've had so far came from a concept video shown by Samsung at the CES keynote in 2013. Hang on though – foldable phones? We had those years ago, didn't we? They were shit. Well, as you can see from the video above, Samsung's new design will be so much more than a simple flip phone. Rumours suggest the the entire screen will be able to fold in half, allowing users to have a screen twice the size of a regular smartphone without having to regress to wearing baggy je

There's reason to be skeptical of Samsung's new 'commitment' to monthly security updates

A generic form response from Samsung's 'security team' does not mean what you think it means. Building on the frustration of the U.S. unlocked Galaxy S7 still not having Nougat while other models are updated, a story is swirling this week about Samsung Mobile Security saying in an email that it will "commit" to updates every month for unlocked phones. As great as it would be, there's plenty of reason to be skeptical about the possibilities of Samsung flipping the switch to a full-on commitment to release these updates monthly — even for a single device in a single country. Going back as far as August 2015, Samsung has made a commitment to streamlining the security patch update process, going so far as to list devices that would receive the updates and start surfacing the patch level in its software. We were rightfully excited back in 2015 — then everyone forgot about it as things got back to normal and various phones and tablets skipped patches for mon

T-Mobile offering Samsung Gear VR for 50 percent off

Many of the deals that T-Mobile offers offer free phones and free lines, but sometimes T-Mo will have some nice discounts on accessories, too. T-Mobile is now offering the Samsung Gear VR for 50 percent off its normal price, which means that it's now $49.97. This model includes a USB Type-C adapter, and it appears to be the Gear VR model that debuted with the Galaxy Note 7 last year. With the Gear VR, you can pop in a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone and experience virtual reality. That includes watching movies, playing games, and viewing 360-degree photos and videos from Facebook. This is a pretty nice deal if you've got a Samsung smartphone and haven't yet given VR a try. There's no telling how long the sale will last, though, so if you're thinking about pulling the trigger, you may want to do it soon. Samsung Galaxy Updates: Samsung Moves To Monthly Updates For Unlocked Galaxy Smartphones

For Google Android users, getting regular security updates on your smartphone has always been a hurdle. But for owners of unlocked Samsung smartphones, the process will get easier soon. Samsung customer service representatives confirmed that unlocked smartphones will immediately move to a monthly update release schedule, according to ZDNet. Read: Samsung Galaxy Deals: Save $100 On S7, S7 Edge "Due to various circumstances, we have been releasing security updates for unlocked (open) Galaxy devices in the U.S. on a quarterly basis," Samsung said. "However, we have now resolved the challenges; and we are committed to releasing security updates for those devices on a monthly basis." Along with confirming the shift in update scheduling, Samsung also noted that the first update package is slated to come this month. Future Samsung smartphones may not include a fingerprint sensor

Some of you might be aware by now that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones will not feature a fingerprint scanner on the front. In order to achieve a high screen-to-body ratio, Samsung has moved the fingerprint scanner from the front to the back of the two devices. In future however, Samsung smartphones may not include a fingerprint scanner at all. According to a tweet out of China, a Samsung employee recently said, "We will kill the fingerprint scanner, it's obsolete". Fingerprint scanners could be replaced by iris scanners as well as a new facial recognition technology that will debut with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.While the iris scanner on the Galaxy Note 7 did not prove to be very reliable, the new facial recognition technology will reportedly allow users to unlock their Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ in just .01 seconds. While the authenticity of the info hasn't been verified yet, it does suggest that Samsung might not includ

Samsung officially launched the #GalaxyA2017 for Central America. #A5 #A7 #Android

The Galaxy A series is the mid-to-high range smartphones that Samsung introduced three years ago with the first Galaxy A, an entire metal phone with a sleek an elegant look. Since then, has been a long road to what it is today, a blend between new and old. "Introducing Galaxy A 2017" Samsung Latin America announced the official availability of the Galaxy A5 and A7  for Central America in a simultaneous event for Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Techbuzzireland editor Vicente  was there and had the chance to talk with a Samsung representative about the fate of the A3 variant. "Market Research proved that customers over those countries prefer bigger screens, reason why we offering these options principally, but we are leaving the option to get the A3 through the online store" So, if you are one of those few that want a smaller body, the Samsung page is the way to go, but for the other two variants they are already hitting shelves nearby.
