Thirst for innovation and technology never ends.
Considering the Finnish mobile phone maker already has a patented flexible ribbon-like battery, the chances of Nokia entering the foldable smartphone race are high, sources say. They are on a untiring struggle to make their launch possible till the mid of 2017.
Despite technical completion, Samsung Electronics has not made a final decision about whether they will unveil the device this year because of marketability and profitability issues, multiple sources said. The report added that after Samsung lost billion of dollars this year following the Note 7 fiasco and eventual recall, the company is keen to recover the losses by launching foldable phones in limited quantities and corner a portion of the market before competitors can walk in.
"The final decision will be made after the personnel reshuffle of the company's information technology and mobile communications unit is carried out", according to The Korea Herald's "initial source". Samsung is pursuing more adorable designs and technologically leading features of their Android powered next generation smartphones.
LG on the other hand are reportedly planning to produce about 100,000 foldable devices within the fourth quarter.
After returning to the competition, Nokia has announced their comeback in the market with a number of new smartphones.
Samsung, had initially completed the development of fold-in phones that tuck the screen inside when folded. After a marketing and distribution agreement with HMD, Nokia is going to launch Nokia E1 and Nokia 6 smartphones in the market.
According to Phone Arena on Friday, Nokia was granted a patent for a foldable device by the US Patent & Trademark Office last September. The screen can be folded or semi-folded at various curve points depending upon how you want to view it.
