LAUNCH: 2017 looks set to be a big year for tech fans

2017 looks set to be another blockbuster year for tech fans.

New smartphones, tablets, watches, games and virtual reality headsets will all be unveiled over the next 12 months.

Apple, Samsung, Sky and Virgin Media will all be updating some of their biggest products and expect to see plenty announcements from these big guns of technology.

Here is Daily Star Online's guide to what to expect next year.

Launch date: Rumoured September 2017

What to expect: The iPhone has its 10th birthday next year and Apple is rumoured to be pulling out all the stops for its next smartphone launch.

The iPhone 8 could include an all-new design with a curved display that will cover the entire front of the device.

Longer battery life, wireless charging and a new virtual home button are also expected when the device is launched in September.

What to expect: The Galaxy S8 looks like it could be the phone to beat with Samsung expected to reveal some major changes to its flagship smartphone.

An edge-to-edge 4K Ultra HD screen could make an appearance and is likely to help the device produce a better virtual reality experience.

Samsung may also remove the home button and follow Apple by ditching the headphone port.

Faster processor, improved camera and longer battery life are also predicted.

What to expect: The all-new V6 set-top device brings a host of new features to living rooms including the ability to watch shows in 4K and record up to seven programmes at the same time.

The V6 can also store over 500 hours of TV even though its around 50% smaller than the original TiVo box.

The new set-top box also brings a new way of recording called Series Link+.

This new option not only records all episodes of your favourite shows but it will also find and show hiding in Box Sets, Catch Up and places like Netflix.

Like Sky Q, TiVo V6 will allow users to stream content to other parts of the house via extra V6 boxes or on tablets and smartphones.

What to expect: Sky Q is almost a year old and now it's getting a major update.

Over the next few months Sky says its Q service will be able to record more shows at once and users will be able to search for programmes via the power of their voice.

Sky is also launching the ability to start Football matches and F1 races from the beginning if you walk in half way through the action.

And a refreshed Q homepage is coming with Sky saying saying that it's "putting personalisation even more at the heart of the viewing experience."

One of the biggest tech shows of the year opens its doors later this week and we expect some massive announcements.

CES 2017 takes place under the bright lights of Las Vegas and it looks set to be bigger and better than ever.

Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic will all launch shiny new gadgets at the show with new TV technology likely to be top of the agenda.

Thinner, brighter and sharper tellies could all be unveiled and we might hear more news about the first paper-thin foldable goggle boxes.

Samsung has already given fans a glimpse of what's to come next week with the Korean tech firm announcing the launch of a Personalised Smart TV Service.

The new services – including 'Sports', 'Music' and 'TV Plus' – will offer personalised content to consumers based on their TV preferences through Samsung's Smart Hub platform.

High Dynamic Range and OLED TVs will also be big in 2017 so watch this space.

What to expect: The new iPad could feature an edge-toedge screen with the famous home button embedded under the display.

Although the Apple Watch has just had an update with the launch of the Series 2, some rumours suggest the US tech giant is working on wearable with a round design - we should know more in September.

What to expect: Google has already launched its internet connected speaker in the US and now the world waits to see when it will arrive in other countries.

This voice powered music maker not only plays your favourite songs but can search the web and bring the all the latest news on weather, traffic, finance and sports scores.

The Google Home also connects to all of your other smart gadgets and can switch on lights and turn the heating up with simple voice commands.

Amazon's brilliant Echo speaker has taken the UK by storm and expect Google's Home to be a big success when it finally lands on this side of the pond.

Next year is going to be one of the biggest in video gaming history.

The roster is jam-packed with hit titles on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

January and February sees the release of horror title Resident Evil 7 and highly anticipated medieval battle For Honour.

Spring will then boast PlayStation exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn, a future-set open world adventure with robot dinosaurs that has fans salivating for more.

Mass Effect Andromeda is also expected before summer on both machines, bringing a much-wanted update to the popular space series for the "next gen" consoles.

In the second half of the year we're expecting the likes of Sonic Mania to appear and Xbox exclusive Crackdown 3 is also due.

Nintendo's new Switch console should be well established by then too, with its expected "killer app" The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild set for later in the year.

Driving fans are also expecting Gran Turismo Sport while VR lovers can prepare for Fallout 4 VR and a virtual reality version of Doom too.

There will also be all the usual Call of Duty and FIFA 18 annual releases ahead of the Christmas rush.

It's going to be an epic 12 months.
