Samsung presses ahead with Tizen smartphones

Samsung is readying a smartphone powered by a new version of the Tizen operating system, despite the platform's so-far lacklustre performance in the market. According to Yonhap, the company is working on a device called SM-Z250 – codenamed Pride – which will run Tizen 3.0. The report did not suggest specifications for the smartphone, although the new platform release should enable it to make use of higher-spec components. Earlier reports said that Tizen 3.0 will support 64-bit processors, offer improved graphics support, and enable higher resolution displays. Samsung's Tizen smartphones to date have been entry-level and focused on emerging markets, primarily India. It was also suggested the smartphone will feature voice control support, following Samsung's earlier acquisition of Viv Labs. The company is tipped to be readying its own voice assistant, Bixby, akin to Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant. However, speculation suggests the comp

Why Samsung Should Start Buttering Up Its Customers

Samsung just hosted a press conference in Korea to share the findings of an investigation into what caused several Galaxy Note 7 smartphones to catch fire. In summary, there were two distinct battery issues, from two different manufacturers, that allowed the positive and negative electrodes to touch. Getting to the root cause of the issue was paramount, but what we learned from this process has ramifications, not only for Samsung but for the industry, because lithium-ion batteries aren't going away anytime soon. The investigation process Samsung went through over these past few months would have been quite difficult for a manufacturer without Samsung's scale, capital, R&D facilities and workforce. Dedicating 700 researchers to evaluate 200,000 smartphones and 30,000 batteries in a newly built testing facility is dedication. Of course, a lot was on the line here for the world's leading smartphone maker. Trust of both users and employees was at risk, and winning that t

Samsung Galaxy S7 Active Smartphone gets WiFi Certified with Android Nougat

Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is ready to get updated with Android Nougat soon. The Active version of the Galaxy S7 is exclusive to AT&T, and now the Android-powered model spotted on the WiFi certification by WiFI Alliance. Earlier the same device was spotted on GFXBench last month running on Nougat. The South Korean Giant has not mentioned anything about the device or update yet, but now we can expect it to happen soon. After several leaks and rumors, Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy S7 Active through AT&T in the U.S. As seen with the earlier Galaxy Active iterations; the new Galaxy S7 Active comes with the military grade rugged body featuring almost the same specifications as normal Galaxy S7. Last year's Galaxy S6 Active offered water and dust proof resistant which are missing are on the original Galaxy S6 device. But the Galaxy S7 is both water and dust proof certified, and the company came up with MIL-STD-810G military grade protection with shatter resista

Nougat update rolling out to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge in India; Samsung Pay teased

Samsung is getting ready to bring Samsung Pay to India. Samsung has started rolling out the Nougat update to the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge in India. The update comes in at 1.2GB, and includes visual tweaks to the user interface, improvements to the always-on display mode, addition of Samsung Pass, and much more. Along with the update, Samsung started teasing the launch of Samsung Pay in the country. As noted by SamMobile, you'll see a message that reads "The future of payments is coming soon!" once you start using the phone following the Nougat update. India's demonitisation drive is paving the way for Samsung Pay. The Indian government's decision to ban high-denomination notes back in November has led to a severe cash crunch in all parts of the country, with demand for new notes far exceeding available supply. As a result, there has been a sharp uptick in the number of digital payments being carried out in the country. Mobile wallet prov

Samsung SDI: Invests 128 million. Dollars. For greater safety on batteries

After the announcement Samsung to cause ignition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, it was the turn of affiliate Samsung SDI, which has as its object the production of batteries, announced the measures that have been taken to avoid such situations from happening again. The Samsung SDI invests further 128 million in the expansion of facilities in order to enhance the safety of the batteries. The company has already established a place for emergency situations in the city Cheonan factory and a special team which respectively faces problems as directly as possible. The task force includes 100 people from three different departments (Development, Production and Technology, Quality and Verification). Security measures starting from the process of development in which the design will now be more careful to avoid "squeeze" of the electrolyte. In part of the production will be testing batteries with X-rays to ensure a one in a million probability of failure of materials. T

Samsung Investigation Reveals New Details About Note7 Battery Failures

Samsung says two different battery flaws were to blame for the fires that plagued its flagship Galaxy Note7 smartphone throughout the fall, leading to two separate recalls and, ultimately, the permanent withdrawal of the model from the market. The details are being released after an internal investigation, following weeks of speculation by reporters and analysts about what the company's report would conclude. Consumer Reports and several other outlets were briefed on the findings in separate meetings on Thursday. An article published by the Wall Street Journal on Friday and widely cited by other news organizations said the report found that a number of the fires occurred because "some of the batteries were irregularly sized." That conflicts with details provided to Consumer Reports and revealed in a press conference on Sunday night. A Samsung representative said the information published on Friday "did not come from Samsung." It has been known since early

Low-Priced Smartphones With High-End Features

If you're holding your breath for the iPhone 8 or the next flagship phone from Samsung, you might want to take a gander at the new, low-priced smartphones from Asus, Huawei, and other little-guy companies. These phones and others being launched in 2017 cost $400 or less. Yet they serve up high-end technology, including wireless and rapid charging, ultrasharp displays, dual cameras, advanced virtual-reality experiences, and almost immortal batteries. You could pay more than twice that much for equivalent technology from the biggest brands. (There are some downsides to these low-priced smartphones—some have skimpy internal storage, for instance.)  With this kind of competition from low-priced smartphones, how long can Apple and Samsung get away with $900 models? That depends, according to Jitesh Ubrani, a senior research analyst for mobile technology at technology consultant IDC. "When it comes to their flagships, I doubt we'll see any price reductions in the future,&q

Google Pixel Or Samsung Galaxy S7: Which Smartphone Is A Better Choice

Samsung To Announce Cause of Galaxy Note 7 Fire on Jan. 23

After months of waiting, Samsung users will finally be able to get their hands on the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system. The official update, which began on Tuesday, follows weeks of testing by the company with a limited group of users through Samsung's Galaxy Beta Program. "With the release of the update, new and improved features promise to let Galaxy users get more out of their devices," the company said today in a statement. "The update also enables faster speeds for downloading apps and system software updates." Slow and Steady Google first released Nougat in August and has already released two subsequent updates to the mobile OS. However, Samsung appears to be taking a slow-but-steady approach with the new version, rolling it out first to owners of its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge handsets. The company said it expects to add several other Galaxy devices to that list throughout the first half of 2017. Customers with other Samsung devices that aren't p

Samsung Brings Android Nougat to Galaxy Phones

By Dave Lee. Updated January 18, 2017. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg appeared in court on Tuesday -- suited, booted and apparently unfazed by accusations his company stole innovative virtual reality technology. A day's worth of questioning in the Dallas courtroom yielded few surprises, other than confirmation that Facebook's deal to buy VR company Oculus was even more expensive than first publicized. As well as the $2 billion fee announced back in 2014, another $1bn was paid out in order to keep key staff on the Oculus team and to provide incentives. The 32-year-old [pictured above], who has also used his time in Dallas to visit community groups, appeared to have little patience for the claims made by Zenimax, the company that alleges its software was stolen in order to make Oculus a success. "It's pretty common when you announce a big deal that people just come out of the woodwork and claim they own some part of the deal," he told the court after being

The Samsung Galaxy S Is An Advanced Touch Screen Phone

Samsung has recently announced the release of a stunning new handset, the i9000 Galaxy S.  Boasting an advanced touch screen, five mega pixel digital camera and Android operating system, this technologically advanced Smartphone looks sure to be a hit for the manufacturer. The five mega pixel digital camera takes excellent quality snapshots thanks to a pixel resolution of 2592x 1944.  A number of image enhancing features simplifies the task of taking quality photos.  These include Autofocus, touch focus and face & smile detection as well as geo-tagging which uses GPS to record the location at which a photo was taken.  The camera can also shoot high quality video in 720p at a rate of 30 frames per second along with a secondary video shooting in VGA quality. In order to provide the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S with optimum connectivity levels, a number of features are utilised.  In order to stay connected to cellular networks, class 12 versions of both EDGE & GPRS are utilised.

Samsung unveils the upper-midrange Galaxy C9 Pro, headed to the Indian market next month

As the criteria (price, most importantly) for defining a 'high-end' smartphone becomes more and more blurred, new devices are filling in the gaps of the evolving smartphone market. Such is the case of the just-announced Galaxy C9 Pro, which sets its foot firmly in the midrange space while trying to aim a little higher… The smartphone, destined to the Indian market (at least for now), is in fact a little beast. Its design — which looks dangerously close to the OnePlus 3T's — is rather simplistic and sleek, with smooth curves wrapping its back and a large, 6-inch panel taking up almost the entirety of the front. The screen, of course, uses Samsung's Super AMOLED technology, while sticking to a reasonable 1080p resolution. Beneath that is the physical home button, which also serves as a fingerprint reader, interposed between Galaxy devices' typical capacitive keys. The frame houses the other keys, as well as a headphone jack and a USB-C port. As far as audio

Apple Accounts for Nearly 1/3 of Holiday Smartphone Sales in US

In the three months following September's launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple's smartphone sales in the U.S. surpassed the sales of Samsung's top Android devices, according to a new report from the market research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. In fact, the iPhone 7 (pictured above) and the iPhone 7 Plus, along with the iPhone 6s, accounted for 31.3 percent of all smartphone sales at the start of the U.S. holiday shopping season, the report said. The fourth and fifth most popular smartphones, Samsung's Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, took 28.9 percent of U.S. sales during that period, according to the report. Kantar Worldpanel ComTech's figures also show that Android sales during those three months dropped not only in the U.S. but in Great Britain and France as well. Meanwhile, the iPhone is now "the most successful product of all time," with Apple's total earnings from iOS devices and services likely to pass the $1 trillion mark later this year

Nokia could be developing a foldable smartphone, hints patent

Thirst for innovation and technology never ends. Considering the Finnish mobile phone maker already has a patented flexible ribbon-like battery, the chances of Nokia entering the foldable smartphone race are high, sources say. They are on a untiring struggle to make their launch possible till the mid of 2017. Despite technical completion, Samsung Electronics has not made a final decision about whether they will unveil the device this year because of marketability and profitability issues, multiple sources said. The report added that after Samsung lost billion of dollars this year following the Note 7 fiasco and eventual recall, the company is keen to recover the losses by launching foldable phones in limited quantities and corner a portion of the market before competitors can walk in. "The final decision will be made after the personnel reshuffle of the company's information technology and mobile communications unit is carried out", according to The Korea Herald

Samsung May Finally Debut Its Foldable Phones This Year

In Brief A source talking to the Korea Times said that Samsung is planning to release its foldable cell phones to consumers sometime this year. LG has also been working on foldable displays but the source does not believe this will translate to cell phone technology. Foldable phones are coming! Samsung and rival LG are preparing to roll out their foldables at the latter part of 2017. And it's about time. We've been seeing reports of phones that bend or fold over the past years, with Samsung filing a patent for it and supposedly already developing one since August of last year — there's even an ad for it already. And even Apple filed a patent for one. "Samsung is expected to roll out more than 100,000 units of fold-out devices in the third quarter," according to a source who spoke to The Korea Herald. "Since the company already secured fold-in phone technology, it was not a big challenge to shift into the fold-out phones." However, Sa

HTC's latest flagship smartphone looks like a cross between the LG V20 and Galaxy Note 7

HTC has taken the wraps off two new smartphones — the U Play and U Ultra. As their names suggest, the former is geared towards the mid-range market, while the latter is aimed at power-hungry users looking for a high-end device with stellar specifications. Both handsets ship with an intuitive AI assistant on board, which HTC is referring to as Sense Companion, and have seen the omission of the beloved 3.5mm headphone jack — a decision that proved to be a deterrent for potential customers of the firm's last smartphone, the Bolt.  As seen below you might say the larger of the two devices, the U Ultra, looks an awful lot like an amalgamation of an LG V10/V20 and Samsung Galaxy Note 7, adding a secondary notification screen on top like the LG's. Both units sport an all-glass exterior that's been touted as crafted to mimic the properties of liquid. That's not necessarily a good thing, though. Apart from looking great, there aren't many benefits of opting for wha

Huawei is moving to make good on its promise to dethrone top smartphone makers Apple (AAPL) and  Samsung Electronics  (SSNLF) by releasing its first high-end smartphone in the U.S. on Friday.  The Chinese telecommunications company unveiled the Mate 9 (pictured below), priced at $599.99, on Thursday at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Mate 9 is available at Best Buy (BBY) and Amazon (AMZN) , among other retailers.  TheStreet's Eric Jhonsa is attending CES all this week. Samsung Forecasts Record Q4 Profit Despite Explosive Galaxy Note 7 Saga

Things were looking pretty grim for Samsung when it threw in the towel and issued a global recall for its fire prone Galaxy Note 7 devices after failing to fix the problem with an initial round of replacements. Despite the setback, Samsung reported preliminary fourth-quarter operating income of 9.2 trillion won (around $7.8 billion in U.S. currency), a 50 percent jump from the same quarter a year ago and its largest profit in three years. The unlikely turn of events in Samsung's bottom line is the result of the South Korean electronics maker having a robust mobile lineup and is especially attributable to its flagship Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge handsets. Those two phones helped Samsung weather the storm and expense of having to recall a major product. "Despite the Note 7's vacuum, Samsung acquitted itself well on the back of sound S7 sales," Lee Seung-woo, an analyst with IBK Securities Co., told Bloomberg. "After a softer landing in the first quarter, Samsung

CES 2017 preview: Samsung, Sony, LG tease flashy new products

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- The much-heralded annual Consumer Electronics Show is set to open Thursday in Las Vegas, and many of the biggest exhibitors held press conferences Wednesday to tease some of the products they'll be unveiling at this weekend's show. Samsung, LG, Sony and several others teased products that will be rolled out to consumers as CES 2017 starts, which cover the obvious -- laptops, cell phones and televisions -- but include new robotic assistants, improvements to the smart home and newly-"smart" devices such as mirrors and brushes. This year's CES, the 50th time it has been held, includes more than 2.6 million square feet of displays in 24 product categories. While much attention has already been put on virtual reality, adding artificial intelligence to everything possible and self-driving cars, much of the focus Wednesday for companies was showing off the next step for many of the most commonly used devices. Samsung Galaxy S8’s Continuum-like Desktop Feature Shown in Concept Image

A few days ago, we reported that Samsung might include a Continuum-like feature on the upcoming Galaxy S8, and SamMobile has stumbled upon a concept image that reveals what the feature might look like. The concept image was released by Androbit and reveals how the Galaxy S8 UI might look when the phone is connected to an external monitor. The Continuum-like feature would allow Galaxy S8 owners to connect their phones to a monitor using a dock and get full-fledged desktop capabilities on their latest Samsung flagship. All of this is uncertain at this point, there are only some rumors regarding this new feature and even the name of the new tool is unclear. However, considering that Android 7.0 Nougat is offering Freeform Window Mode, it doesn't seem improbable for Samsung to include such a useful feature on the upcoming Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S8 will be announced in April Aside from a Continuum-like feature, the Galaxy S8 is also rumored to come with an external S Pen accesso

Everything we know so far about Samsung’s Galaxy S8

The second half of 2016 was bittersweet for Samsung. Granted, it was far more bitter than it was sweet, considering Samsung had no choice but to cancel the hottest smartphone it has ever created when it kept exploding in users' hands. It also had to recall more than 1 million handsets, a process that is still ongoing today. Yes, bitter indeed. But the sweet part came when data released by a market research company suggested that Samsung phones accounted for 22% of all activations over the holiday period, a figure that was actually up 1% compared to the holidays in 2015. Samsung's road was rocky indeed toward the end of 2016, but the company is moving on. We've already seen Samsung unveil three new Galaxy smartphones ahead of CES 2017, but the star of the show for Samsung in the first half of the year is undoubtedly the upcoming Galaxy S8, which is set to be announced sometime this quarter. Now, let's take a look at what we can expect from a device that is already sh
