A Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone owner in South Africa got a fright when his phone exploded in his pocket while he was stuck in traffic.
Brandon Davids explained that the incident happened on 28 October while driving to work in Claremont.
"My cellphone was in my pocket and I had not accessed it since leaving home, least not that I can remember," said Davids.
"I had nothing running in the background, to my knowledge, and my phone was not plugged in to charge."
Davids said he always used his original Samsung charger and never used any other means of charging.
"I was listening to the radio when all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, I heard a loud poof."
He felt heat on his leg and when he looked down he saw smoke coming from his pants pocket.
"I immediately thought of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 issue, and could not believe this was happening to me."
He grabbed the phone with his thumb and index finger and removed it from his pocket.
"I tossed it onto the passenger seat and immediately the car was filled with smoke."
"I jumped out, ran around the back to the passenger door, opened the door, and in a brushing motion brushed the phone from the seat onto the pavement."
Samsung replaced the phone with a new Galaxy S6Davids approached Samsung about the incident and the company replaced the phone with a new Galaxy S6.
Davids expressed frustration with the fact that Samsung did not seem to take the matter seriously enough, and was not apologetic regarding the incident.
Samsung South Africa told MyBroadband that it is taking the incident very seriously and apologised to Davids.
"On behalf of Samsung South Africa, we wish to apologise to Mr. Davids that he was not contacted immediately upon the arrival of the handset at Samsung After Care Service Centre," said Samsung SA Corporate Marketing and Communications Director Michelle Potgieter.
"We can confirm that Mr. Davids was contacted by our Director for Customer Care, Mr. Chetty, and that he is satisfied that the matter has been addressed."
Samsung said the damaged Galaxy S6 was replaced with a new device and the damaged unit has been sent to Samsung Electronics HQ for an investigation.
"We need to highlight that this is an isolated incident and that several external factors may have contributed to the failure."
