Samsung Electronics Says It Will Consider Restructuring -- 2nd Update

Today : Tuesday 29 November 2016 By Jonathan Cheng SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. said it would raise dividends and consider restructuring as the world's largest smartphone maker seeks to appease growing demand for governance reforms. Over the long term, the company said Tuesday it wants to return any cash in excess of 70 trillion Korean won ($59.8 billion) to shareholders. At the end of September, Samsung had slightly more than 70 trillion won in cash on hand after subtracting debt. The company also said it would appoint a new independent board member with global experience. Samsung's package of measures comes as it reels from a damaging smartphone recall that has already cost more than $5 billion and has clouded its earnings outlook for the year. It also comes two weeks after it spent $8 billion in an all-cash deal to acquire Harman International Industries Inc., as Samsung seeks new growth opportunities in automotive technology. Samsung Pay on Gear S3 watch is ‘not available with’ Pixel phones… yet

We interrupt our ongoing coverage of the US Cyber Monday deal bonanza for an important public service announcement directed at a very small but vocal group of Android power users in possession of both a Pixel phone and Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch. There's unfortunately no point in trying to activate Samsung Pay on the next-gen Tizen smartwatch, be it the Classic or Frontier variant, when synched to a hot new Google-made handheld. The mobile payment app's official Twitter channel admins have just confirmed "#SamsungPay on the Gear S3 is not available with Pixel devices"… for some reason. It might be because Samsung is yet to bring Pixel compatibility to either the Gear S3 or S2 in the first place. But technically, the two wearable gadgets aren't explicitly listed as supporting the LG V20, and there's already clear evidence the popular 5.7-incher can both connect to the Gear S3 and easily sustain its digital wallet functionality. Our guess is the reas

Samsung Claims Galaxy S7 Phones Are Indeed Safe

Despite a recent report about a Galaxy S7 smartphone exploding in a Canadian man's hands, Samsung has said in a statement that it stands behind the safety of its devices. Concerns about overheating in another Samsung phone could have the potential to create another black eye for the South Korean electronics giant in the wake of the disastrous release and subsequent recall of the Galaxy Note 7 just a few months ago. "Samsung stands behind the quality and safety of the Galaxy S7 family," the company said in a statement Friday. "There have been no confirmed cases of internal battery failures with these devices among the more than 10 million devices being used by consumers in the United States; however, we have confirmed a number of instances caused by severe external damage. Apple iPhone 8 vS Samsung Galaxy S8: The Best And Future Of Smartphones

Arguably, the two largest players in the smartphone market are Apple and Samsung. And while they have definitely cemented their names in the tech world, both companies suffered losses this year. The Cupertino-based company saw a dip in sales and plenty of online backlash for the lacking redesign in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Meanwhile, Samsung suffered from the issues surrounding its Galaxy Note 7 units. This is exactly why the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8 are so sought after. Apple's slated to release the best handheld it has in recent history, especially because it will be the company's 10th anniversary release. Meanwhile, Samsung is looking for redemption, after two recalls of its last release. According to Tech Times, the iPhone 8 will be released in a 4.7 inch variant and a 5.5 inch option. And while there will be small differences between the units, both are still expected to arrive at the market with Apple innovations. One of the most talked of which, is a bezel-les

Samsung Not Giving Up: Developing S8, New Note

It is no secret that the affair of the flammable Note 7 caused enormous damage to Samsung. Besides the enormous financial damage, it also seriously affected the image of the world's large smartphone manufacturer in general, and especially its Note brand. It is no surprise that many people believed that Samsung would have to abandon the series, or at least its name, by issuing its phablet under a new name. A new and reliable report, however, states that Samsung may have completely different plans. Note Users: You Should (Probably) Wait Samsung Galaxy S8 models are indeed skipping SM-G94* model numbers, will ship as SM-G950 & SM-G955. Know what else is in the works? Huawei announced it has sold over 9 million Huawei P9 smartphones

Huawei is one of the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturers on the planet, finding itself poised just behind Samsung and Apple when it comes to the number of handsets sold across the globe. As impressive as it is, the Huawei P9 from earlier this year is still an awesome option, and its popularity speaks for itself. Since launch, 9 million Huawei P9 units have been sold. That's mostly thanks to its massive Chinese market and the demand for its smartphones there, though Huawei's efforts to push into the global market haven't been without reward. At an event in China earlier today, Huawei announced that its Huawei P9 smartphone has sold nine million handsets since the phone was unveiled in April of this year. That's up three million from September when the company announced the device had reached six million in sales, meaning it sold three million devices in just two months. It shouldn't be surprising by any means that the Huawei P9 has sold well;

Why Google’s Pixel Is More About Strategy Than Smartphones

In early October, Google unveiled two devices that have been rumored in tech blogs for months: the Pixel smartphone and its larger sibling, the Pixel XL. The touchscreen phones look very much like high-end iPhones and Samsung devices. They are priced similarly as well, and have generally received positive reviews: Veteran tech journalist Walt Mossberg opined that the Pixel was "easily the best Android phone I've ever tested." It is the first smartphone that is completely designed and engineered by Google, with high-end finishes and features that aim to deliver a pure Android experience. The Pixel comes in either a 5-inch or 5.5-inch Gorilla Glass display with a 12.3-megapixel rear-facing camera. It promises fast charging: 15 minutes provides seven hours of usage. The smartphone can record video in 4K ultra HD and comes with a headphone jack, although it is not water-resistant. Google provides 24/7 customer service for Pixel and unlimited cloud storage of photos and vi

Galaxy S8 May Become Samsung’s First Smartphone With Pressure-Sensitive Display

Pressure-sensitive displays while rare on smartphones, are not exactly an elusive feature. Apple and Huawei have incorporated them in their flagship devices to varying levels of success. And recently, Chinese mobile fast pacer Xiaomi has been on that pressure-sensitive display vibe with some of its latest smartphones. While the iPhone continues to rock 3D Touch, the wider implementation of Force Touch which the company first deployed on the Apple Watch, Huawei has eerily gone silent since releasing a version of the Mate S phablet with a similar pressure-sensitive display, The company's latest Mate series smartphone, the Mate 9, lacks a variant with a pressure-sensitive display and there's not even an ounce of a rumour anticipating such a model. Not in the foreseeable future. After having held out for a while, Samsung may be convinced that it now has the capacity to bring to the market its own smartphone with a pressure-sensitive display to take on Apple's iP

Samsung may unveil bendable smartphones in 2017: report

A Samsung patent showing a design concept for a foldable smartphone is making rounds on the internet these days. The renderings in the patent, as well as a report claiming that Samsung will unveil two bendable phones in 2017. The Samsung Galaxy X, or Project Valley as it's also known, has been discussed, leaked, rumored, patented, and shown as a prototype since 2014, making it clear the company is serious about producing a device that folds up. The foldable device is likely to be expensive to produce and expensive to sell, but according to Digital Trends, Samsung's confidence has totally been regressed regarding its release of the Galaxy X and has shifted it focus on the release of the Galaxy S8. source Source: Samsung may unveil bendable smartphones in 2017: report

Samsung likely to unveil Galaxy X smartphone in 2017

It was very early in the year that we assumed Samsung would finally release a foldable device next year, and that this first device to take advantage of this would more than likely be the Samsung Galaxy S8. According to reports, Samsung has acquired the rights to Viv Labs Inc., a firm by a co-creator of Apple Inc's Siri voice assistant program. But this time instead of naming it as Edge, Samsung will call it Galaxy S8 Plus, claims VentureBeat. Seeing how quality assessment and so many internal issues started to appear, Samsung is taking its time and ensuring that its next flagship is going to beat all expectations. The South Korean tech company absolutely can not repeat the same mistake as it did with the Galaxy Note 7 because if that's the case, then it would likely be the end of Samsung as we know it. "When we compare this to the Galaxy S7 series from earlier this year, we see that the Galaxy S7 has a 5.1" display while the Galaxy S7 Edge variant has a

Samsung launches $10K promotion to boost Tizen app development

Most of Samsung's phones run Google's mobile Android software, but the Seoul, South Korea-based company has long been developing an alternative. It's called Tizen, and it's currently the manufacturer's firmware of choice for its TVs, cameras, and Gear line of smartwatches. But the company has far broader ambitions for its nascent operating system. Case in point: On Friday, the company launched the Tizen Mobile App Incentive Program, an ongoing contest that will see developers awarded cash prizes if their clients manage to break into the top 100 most-downloaded apps from Samsung's Tizen Store. It's not Samsung's first investment in Tizen's app ecosystem, but it's one of the most significant yet. The Tizen Mobile App Incentive Program, which will run each month from February through September 2017, will dole out a collective $1 million to lucky developers. "As a committed leader of the Tizen platform, we strive to further benefit, expand u

Samsung Galaxy S6 explodes in South African’s pocket

A Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone owner in South Africa got a fright when his phone exploded in his pocket while he was stuck in traffic. Brandon Davids explained that the incident happened on 28 October while driving to work in Claremont. "My cellphone was in my pocket and I had not accessed it since leaving home, least not that I can remember," said Davids. "I had nothing running in the background, to my knowledge, and my phone was not plugged in to charge." Davids said he always used his original Samsung charger and never used any other means of charging. "I was listening to the radio when all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, I heard a loud poof." He felt heat on his leg and when he looked down he saw smoke coming from his pants pocket. "I immediately thought of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 issue, and could not believe this was happening to me."
