Durability tests: Samsung phones survive water, not falls

Both new Galaxy phones still functioned just fine but their audio systems became muffled and distorted.

The waterproofing is a big feature of Samsung's latest flagship, as while the Galaxy S5 was waterproof the Samsung Galaxy S6 wasn't and most other phones aren't either, giving the Galaxy S7 a near unique selling point. For years already, Samsung has been producing an S-Mini but the smaller device failed to come out with flagship specs. They're not created to be used underwater — the touch screens don't function until dry — but Samsung promises that the phones can still work after spending up to 30 minutes in up to five feet of water. But independent testing of the newly released phones finds that Apple's iPhone 6s may be more durable.

Verizon supports Samsung Pay app on its Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge line. The iPhone 6s completed the test with only a minor knick while the display on the larger 6s Plus totally shattered.

The 5.1-inch Galaxy S7, meanwhile, literally fell flat on its face in the face down and cracked instantly during its drop test, and the two phones scored below average in the labs' new tumble test. Now, guess how much Samsung spent on making it. According to market researcher IHS, the bill of materials for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 version of the Galaxy S7 is reportedly $255.

After bendgate, testing the bendability of smartphones has been a crucial component of smartphone stress tests.

Coming to the last part the bend test, the Galaxy S7 edge bends at 110 pounds and snaps at 170 pounds while the S7 tolerated 170 pounds. The S7 could take 170 pounds, just like the iPhone 6s. The iPhone 6s was the least breakable of the four phones tested, though SquareTrade still rates it as a medium risk for breakability.

Samsung expects the Galaxy S7 series to play a decisive role in revitalizing sales as the company's mobile business division has remained well below its heyday figures.

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 (S820) Review

This year has been difficult for smartphones, which is a bit of a paradox when you consider just how much better things have gotten compared to last year. With Snapdragon 820, 650, 652, and 625 we've finally moved past the shadow of the Snapdragon 810, 808, and 617/615. While there were Android devices that shipped with the Exynos 7420, they were often paired with a modem that was not necessarily the most power efficient. Despite all of this, there seems to be a general disappointment with smartphones. People are increasingly finding it hard to justify phones like the HTC 10 or Galaxy S7 with competition from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and even Apple with their iPhone SE. In this context the Galaxy Note7 brings much of the flavor of the Galaxy S7 edge, but blends it with the S-Pen of the Note line and a few new features like the iris scanner. If you were paying attention to the industry with the launch of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note5, it's very much more of the same rather than the m
