IBTimes UK Technology Awards: Best smartphone of 2016

Smartphones made a splash in 2016 – but what mobile made the biggest wave? IBTimes UK With stagnation starting to creep in through 2015 we had our concerns that 2016 would be an unremarkable year for the smartphone. But thankfully it will go down as a year to remember - and not just because of Samsung's calamitous Note 7 recall. Exploding batteries aside, almost every manufacturer put their neck on the line and tried something different. IBTimes UK Technology Awards 2016: Gadget of the Year IBTimes UK Technology Awards 2016: Smartphone of the Year IBTimes UK Technology Awards 2016: Game of the Year Winner: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Look past the disastrous Galaxy Note 7 fiasco and Samsung had a very strong start to 2016 with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. For us the S7 Edge is the winner on account of its larger, curved screen. Add the awesome looks to a powerful handset with an impressive camera, waterproofing and a microSD card slot for extra storage, and it's easy

The best smartphone tech coming your way in 2017

While we don't have a magic crystal ball, a combination of what we've seen in 2016, plus one or two murmurs from the supply chains, gives enough clues to be able to make some fairly educated guesses about what's ahead. The smartphone tech of 2017 We may not see a huge leap forward in the evolution of the smartphone over the next 12 months, but that doesn't mean there won't be any surprises along the way, and here's what might be in store – though we should mention this is based mainly on leaks and rumors, so don't get your hopes up too high just yet. Iris scanning technology hasn't appeared on many phones to date, but one handset it did show up on in 2016 was the doomed Samsung Galaxy Note 7. With the necessary components now becoming cheaper and more accurate, you can expect to see more phones feature this futuristic form of security. It's been linked with the Samsung Galaxy S8, among other handsets. Samsung will be

NPD claims Samsung’s exploding phones did little to help Apple’s iPhone

Dec 30, 2016 - 12:55 AM UTC — AAPL: 116.752 (-0.008, -0.01%) | NASDAQ: 5423.86 (-14.70, -0.27%) Thursday, December 29, 2016 · 12:45 pm · 2 Comments Despite "the massive financial and reputational hit Samsung took in the second half of 2016 with the global recall of millions of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones… Samsung sales didn't plummet because the majority of Android loyalists are already entrenched in Samsung products, said Stephen Baker, the primary hardware analyst at the NPD Group Inc. tech industry research firm," Nathan Olivarez-Giles reports for The Wall Street Journal. "'Most of those who bought or wanted to buy a Note 7 opted for a different high-end Galaxy phone,' Mr. Baker said." Rumor Claims Samsung Galaxy S8 Comes with 8GB RAM, UFS 2.1 Flash Storage

More rumors about the Galaxy S8 meant to increase the hype around Samsung's flagship smartphone continue to emerge. The latest news that we've got from China concerns the amount of memory inside the Galaxy S8, as well as the technology behind it. If you've been following our Galaxy S8 news, then you already know the smartphone is rumored to pack 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. However, a new rumor coming from China claims the Galaxy S8 will be world's first smartphone to include 8GB of RAM. According to the Chinese leakster, Samsung will start their own manufacture of 8GB RAM memory using its 10nm technology. On top of that, the 256GB of internal memory will benefit from UFS 2.1 flash storage technology. An updated version of UFS 2.0, the new flash storage technology includes key improvements over earlier versions and it should provide data security through the use of inline cryptography between the system-on-chip (SoC) and UFS storage device. Samsung Galaxy A5 Headed For Android 7.0 Nougat

Although this has only been affirmed by one major carrier in Australia, there is no reason to believe that Samsung will not be pushing out the Android 7.0 Nougat update to all Galaxy A5 devices around the world. Click on "Install now" and Android 7.0 Nougat will be installed to your Moto Z smartphone. As far as v7.1.1 is concerned, it comes with additional app shortcuts, circular launcher icons, enhanced Live Wallpaper, profession theme-based Emojis, GIFs sharing on messages, and image keyboard support, among others. Furthermore, users need also to make sure that their Samsung Galaxy Note 3 handsets have the following features working: Cellular data, Camera, Calls, RIL and Wi-Fi. Now Nougat has made its way to Moto Z smartphone India. In fact, it will automatically void any active product warranties for the phone. When Lenovo acquired Motorola, there were fears that this would spell an end to the lightning fast android updates Moto users had been enjoying under Goog

Foldable smartphones could have 20% marketshare by 2019

An executive at Kolon Industries believes that foldable smartphones could have around 20% of the smartphone market share by 2019. Why does his opinion matter? The Kolon Group is one of the only companies in the world that can mass produce colorless polyimide, which is one of the components for producing foldable devices. It's a flexible film that can replace the rigid glass that we currently use on our smartphones. According to reports, Kolon Industries is supplying materials to various manufacturers of smartphones, including Samsung and LG though neither company has confirmed this officially. Despite that, Kolon Industries' head Kang Chung-seok believes the foldable displays will make headway in South Korea. "Around three to five tech companies are expected to mass produce foldable phones in 2018 globally. The devices will then grab around 20 percent of the total smartphone market here." Most manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Xiaomi, Sony, and even Apple ar

Sony Xperia XZ was the most popular new Android smartphone of 2H 2016

According to data released by research firm Apteligent, Sony's latest flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia XZ was the most popular new flagship released in the second half of 2016. Samsung discontinuing the Galaxy Note 7 seems to have surprisingly benefited Sony a lot more than other vendors such as LG, HTC, Motorola, Google, and OnePlus. Some of the other smartphones that benefited after Samsung stopped sales of the Galaxy Note 7 include the Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, and the LG V20. Motorola's Moto Z saw adoption rates drop by the end of November for some odd reason. But as can be seen in the charts below, they were all far behind the Xperia XZ. The info does surprise, as the Xperia XZ isn't a "phablet" by any means and Sony flagships have traditionally not been very successful commercially. Then there's the fact that Sony did not put much effort into marketing the Xperia XZ heavily, which makes this feat seem even more impressive. I

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 refuses to die

You'd think with a full recall in effect, a generous exchange program, and devices that actually explode, Samsung's  Galaxy Note 7 would be as close to dead as a smartphone can be. That doesn't appear to be the case, however, and as Android Police reports, the number of active Note 7 phones out there in the wild is actually still higher than several other flagship phones from competing companies. The data, which comes via Apteligent and tracks mobile device "check-ins", shows that the excitable Note 7 comes in higher than the LG V20 and HTC 10 Evo, and is roughly as even with Motorola's Moto Z. Samsung's phone has indeed shown a massive drop off in the number of users, but it somehow remains ahead of much of its competition despite its devastating safety record. Google's Pixel and Pixel XL come in slightly higher on the activity chart, as does Sony's Xperia XZ, though none of those devices have managed to eclipse the Note 7's mark p

Galaxy S8 Rumors: Samsung´s New Flagship Will Have Similar Specs As The Recalled Galaxy Note 7

#Samsung #GalaxyS8 – Galaxy S8 Rumors: Samsung´s New Flagship Will Have Similar Specs As The Recalled Galaxy Note 7 : As everyone knows, the Galaxy S8 is the most important solution that Samsung has to restore its reputation and the customers´ confidence in the brand, after what happened with the Galaxy Note 7. The Galaxy S8 Could Have The Iris Recognition Technology According to several reports, one of the specs that the Galaxy Note 7 used and it would be adopted by the Galaxy S8 is the iris recognition technology, which was something incredible before the recalled flagship exploded, and the opinions were only about how great it was. Top business smartphones for 2016: Google Pixel

Since I unboxed my Google Pixel smartphone, my iPhone 6S Plus has been sitting unused in a drawer. That will tell you something about Google's first effort to manufacture its own Android smartphone. The announcement of the Pixel came somewhat out of left field earlier this year. Prior to this device's launch, Google Inc. seemed content to push out its free Android operating system and let OEMs make the hardware. Sure, there was that whole episode where it bought Motorola Mobility in 2011 and released the well-received Moto X. But that ended abruptly with the sale of that division to Lenovo, making the whole episode seem like an unusual departure from Google's strategy to just get Android onto as many devices as possible, no matter who makes them. Except this year it launched the Pixel, proving that it apparently didn't need to acquire a team of experienced device makers (Google designed the Pixel, HTC manufactured it) to push out one of the best phones on the ma

First leaked images of the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro surface

The very first images showing the upcoming Galaxy C7 Pro mid-range Android smartphone from Samsung have been leaked online today, courtesy of Roland Quandt. The images have actually been taken by Chinese telecommunications regulatory authority TENAA, and are expected to be made public when it certifies the smartphone for sale in China. In terms of the overall design, the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro appears to be largely similar to the Galaxy C7, with very few minor differences. The camera lens at the back appears to be slightly different, and so do the antenna lines at the back of the handset. Other than these changes, it is hard to spot a difference between the two handsets. In terms of specs, the smartphone is expected to feature a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 Full HD resolution and pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 octa-core chipset under the hood. The chipset features a high 2.2 GHz clock speed and integrates the Adreno 506 GPU to handle the graphics.

Recalled Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Phones To Be Disabled Remotely Due to Fire, Explosion Concerns

Due to continuing concerns about the risk of fires and battery explosions with recalled Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, the manufacturer has decided to remotely disable the devices.  Samsung Electronics Co Ltd issued a press release last week, indicating that a software update will be released on December 19 that is designed to automatically deactivate any remaining devices still in use. The update will prevent them from being recharged and will eliminate their ability to work as a mobile device. The disabling software notice was issued following a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall announced on September 15, which included roughly 1 million devices with lithium ion batteries that could overheat and catch on fire. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least 26 burn injuries have been reported and another 55 reports of property damage to homes and vehicles have occurred as a result of Galaxy Note 7 fires and explosions. The devices were banned from U.S. pa

Foldable smartphones from Samsung: Two step introduction

While it's definitely not the first time that we are hearing about an upcoming foldable smartphone from Samsung, the latest report from ET News has recently added a few details to the speculations. Samsung may at first, launch a dual-screen device which will have two flat flexible displays on each side of it. Whether or not the second foldable smartphone is introduced to the market later will depend on how well the first product is received by the customers. If the report is to be believed, then the twin-display smartphone will hit markets by 2017 in small amounts and in select markets around the world. As the second part of the company's two step introduction plan, a foldable smartphone with a single flexible display will later be released in the year 2018 (considering that the first one turns out to be a success). This news reminds us of the Samsung Galaxy Round, the smartphone which featured a curved OLED panel. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Round wasn't popular en

Samsung To Brick Remaining Galaxy Note 7s

We all know that Samsung permanently suspended the production of Galaxy Note 7 because of its explosive nature. Hence, Samsung decided now to brick all the remaining Galaxy Note 7s. Recently we have seen Samsung permanently suspended the production of Galaxy Note 7 because of its explosive nature. There are some serious problems in the factory battery anode and cathode cell contacts which cause the phones to explode. Not only that even we have also seen that Samsung also throwing up extra $100 to encourage people to turn in Samsung phones. Samsung had also launched a replacement program, to replace the existing Note 7 to the "Safe" ones, however, the so-called "Safe" units of Galaxy Note 7 also started catching fire. Looking after so many issues, the company permanently suspended the production of Galaxy Note 7 as we told earlier. However, there are still many people who haven't replaced their phone and are quite happy with it. Samsung had an

It didn't explode, but Tillery said, "The phone was clearly burning." Unsatisfied with the response from Samsung, Tillery called Press on  Your Side for assistance. 2017 Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, & A7 Smartphones to Come with IP68 Rating & 16MP Front Camera

Lately, we are seeing several leaks about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A3 2017, Galaxy A5 2017, and Galaxy A7 2017 smartphones. Just recently, the renders of all the three devices are leaked, and now we got some credible information about all these three devices. In December 2015, Samsung had officially launched the Galaxy A3 2016, A5 2016, and A7 2016 smartphones in China. In early 2016, the three devices are made available in most of the other markets including India. Now, we can expect the 2017 Galaxy A devices to be launched in China by the end of this month. With the 2017 iteration of the Galaxy A devices, there will be no protruding camera on the rear. The devices come with a metal frame with a 3D curved glass on the rear and a 2.5D glass on the front. Surprisingly, all the upcoming Galaxy A devices will be coming with IP68 certification. The Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, and Note 7 smartphones launched in 2016 also came with the same IP68 certification. For comparison, the Apple iPho

Samsung Might Ditch 3.5mm Headphone Jack on it’s Anticipated Galaxy S8

Share on Facebook Tweet on Twitter According to some online reports, believe that South Korean smartphone giants, Samsung Corp. might ditch '3.5mm Headphone Jack' on it's upcoming Galaxy S8, joining the list of smartphones that have abandoned the 3.5mm headphone jack. This means that all the existing headphones will not be compatible with the flagship unless when you are to use a USB Type-C adapter the phablet is to feature as one of it's specs. This also means that you won't be able to plug in the Galaxy S8 and use wired headphones at the same time. Aside from ditching the Headphone Jack, other reports claim that the smartphone markers might also abound the 'Home Button' while the front camera (selfie cam) will come with the auto-focus feature. Source claim that the removing of the Headphone Jack enables Samsung to make the Galaxy S8 thinner while also freeing up more space inside for a bigger battery. Removing the 3.5mm Headphone Ja

Supreme Court Sides With Samsung, Against Apple In Patent Infringement Fight

The Supreme Court has weighed in on a patent battle between Samsung and Apple, siding with Samsung by declaring that the patent infringement for an element of a design should be treated differently from the infringement of an entire design. The dispute between the two tech giants isn't about whether Samsung violated Apple's patents, but rather about how much money it's reasonable for Samsung to pay for the infringement. Samsung previously had been ordered to pay Apple $399 million in damages. The high court's unanimous decision sends the suit back to a lower court to reconsider what is a reasonable amount. Here's how NPR's Nina Totenberg and An-Li Herring explained the underlying issue a few months ago: "The two smartphone giants have been battling each other — not just in the marketplace but also in the courts — since 2011, a year after Samsung unveiled a new set of smartphones, including the Galaxy. Like iPhones, the Samsung products, for the
