Samsung Galaxy Note 5 vs. Moto X Style (Pure Edition) – Same Screen Size, Different Internal Specs

The current Moto X is a smartphone on steroids, but its predecessors had average sizes. Motorola already built a phablet for Google, which resembled the Moto X 2014, but this model is smaller and has an improved design. Samsung has released its annual Note smartphone and the fifth generation doesn't look like any of the previous models. Designs The Note 5 is totally revamped. Good bye faux leather on the back, hello Corning Gorilla Glass 4 with reflective effects! The phone is available in four variants of colors and has a metal frame which unites the two sides and on the front, inside the home button, is integrated a fingerprint scanner. Also, the Note 5 comes with the popular S Pen stylus, which doesn't have an auto-eject function, as rumored. The physical dimensions are 153.2×76.1×7.6 mm and the total weight is 171grams. The Moto X Style comes with a water repellant nano-coating, it measures 153.9×76.2×11.1 mm and it's 8grams heavier. The back is made of rubber sil

Flash stock firmware to Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6 to fix rebooting issue

Below is one unique case that demonstrates how powerful smartphones like the #Samsung #GalaxyS6 can mess itself up for no apparent reason. What happens here is that our fellow #Android user, Don, was using his S6 normally when it suddenly decides to conk out on him. Don did not mention any changes (like updating the device, installing apps, downloading a file, etc) that might suggest an obvious software-caused problem. We think that the problem may be software in nature though and in this case, the best solution is to flash Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6 to stock firmware. We take any Android requests for assistance in our blog so if you find yourself looking for solutions, contact us by using the link provided at the bottom of the page. My phone was working fine in the morning. I was using it as an internet tether for my laptop when the phone rebooted itself. I thought it was odd but guessed it did an update when I wasn't looking. When it continued boot-looping, I knew somet

Samsung’s Galaxy A8 review: Good mid-range phone, but a bit overpriced

Written by Shruti Dhapola | Updated: August 30, 2015 10:30 am Samsung Galaxy A8 comes with a Snapdragon 615 processor and a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display. Samsung's Galaxy A series is all about delivering top-end performance with beautiful designs, but at price points that are not as high as the premium Galaxy S range. The Samsung Galaxy A8 is the latest smartphone in this series and is touted as the slimmest 'Galaxy' phone till now as it is only 5.9mm thick — even the Samsung flagship Galaxy S6 is 6.8 mm. So does this ultra-slim Galaxy A8 deliver? Specs: 5.7-inch full HD Super AMOLED display | Snapdragon 615 Octa-core processor | 2GB RAM, 32GB storage space (expandable up to 128GB) | 16MP rear + 5MP front camera | 3,050mAh battery | 4G LTE Dual SIM | Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) | Fingerprint scanner Price: Rs 32,500 Watch video below: (App users click here for video) Design, Screen: Samsung Galaxy A8 has a metal frame on the sides, full metal unibody build a

Samsung goes one step further in chase for iPhone users with test drive program

As Apple sets the stage for the official announcements of the highly anticipated next-generation iPhones, Samsung intensifies its own efforts of promoting the latest Galaxy flagships. The S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note 5 were offered on an "ultimate test drive" for free to iPhone owners for up to 30 days last week, a publicity stunt that proved so popular all three Androids went out of stock in a matter of hours. To this day, Samsung hasn't been able to replenish inventory dedicated to the trial program, but there may still be hope for iFans looking to jump ship. Furthermore, those who were lucky enough to qualify and receive their test units can sign up for complimentary $100 Google Play credit upon settling on a high-end new Galaxy, and an extra $100 check after trading old iPhones. All in all, you can enjoy an S6 Edge+ gratis for a full month, no strings attached, then essentially take $200 off your purchase. The extended offer is apparently valid through December

Apple Inc. (AAPL) iOS Market Share To Suffer As Chinese Economic Slowdown May Slash Global Smartphone Growth

An IDC report asserts that smartphone shipments will continue their dwindling growth trajectory this year, due to the Chinese economy's slowdown. China is the largest smartphone market, and is the biggest contributor to Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) flagship iPhones. It has been the main factor for iPhone's astounding sales in the last few quarters. The report gave the lead to Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android smartphones, at 81% smartphone market share, for the next four years. Moreover, if Apple were to introduce its relatively low-cost iPhone 6C, it will bolster the iOS market share. It needs to be understood that the Chinese market slowdown will hit high-end brands the most, especially Samsung Group's (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. In a battle between high-end brands in China, Apple may win due to the prestige associated with its products, and its exclusive ecosystem. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy may see a drop in sales. The most to win

With Obi Smartphones, John Sculley Takes Old Lessons From Apple—And Pepsi—To New Places

John Sculley's new smartphones are not coming to a store near you anytime soon. That's by design. The 76-year-old former Apple CEO—who ran the company in the years after Steve Jobs' ouster in 1985—is cofounder of Obi Worldphone. A large chunk of its strategy for doing well in the remarkably daunting smartphone business involves avoiding the U.S. market altogether. The Obi SF1 in its packaging Instead, Obi is launching two Android models aimed at countries where the smartphones that matter most are not high-end flagships such as iPhones and Samsung Galaxy models, but rather budget-priced phones for young, first-time buyers. The $199 SF1 (for "San Francisco") is an LTE phone with a fiberglass body and metal trim; a raised 5" display protected by Gorilla Glass 4; an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 614 chip; Dolby audio; cameras with flash on both the front and back; and a 3000-mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge technology. The $129 SJ1.5 (for "San

Verizon will help you activate select unlocked phones on its network

Because Verizon runs a CDMA network, its customers have typically only been able to use phones sold by Verizon itself. That's changing now, though, as the big red carrier is allowing select non-Verizon phones onto its service. Verizon's website now allows consumers to see if their device will work on its network. The carrier has confirmed that both the iPhone 6 and Nexus 6 are eligible to be used on its service, even if they weren't bought from Verizon, so long as they're unlocked before being activated on Verizon. That's because those unlocked devices include support for Verizon's CDMA and LTE network. To see if your device can be activated on Verizon, you simple navigate to this page, select your device's operating system, and then enter your IMEI. If the phone can be used on Verizon's network, you'll then enter your SIM ID number or buy a new SIM from Verizon. I tested the page by entering the IMEI of my unlocked iPhone 6 Plus and was told t

The best smartphone in Australia

Australians have a wide variety of options available when it comes to great smartphones in 2015. Shape, size, style, performance and features are all factors that can be considered, and the diversity is endless. So with all this variety available, which model should you buy? Unless you specifically want a phone with a very large screen, want to run a different operating system like Android or want a cheaper model, we think the Apple iPhone 6 is currently the best smartphone for most Australians, and the one most people should buy. In this article, we'll outline why. Note: We are also expecting Apple and Google to announce new smartphones shortly, so you may want to hold off on purchasing for a couple of months until we get a better picture on smartphone availability in Australia over the next six months. The iPhone 6 is our recommendation for today. We'll continue to update this article over time as new models are released. How do you define 'best'? Buying a

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Pros Best phone screen available. Octo-core Samsung Exynos 7420 processor. Excellent battery life. S Pen is still unique among phablets. Cons Battery is not removable. No card slot for storage expansion. Some gimmicky features. Bottom Line The Galaxy Note 5 packs incredible processing power and puts it behind the best display you can get. But this iteration of Samsung's top phablet comes with compromises. By Sascha Segan One-and-a-half steps forward, one step back. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 gives you the best smartphone screen on the market, and it continues to be endlessly productive, thanks to its slick S Pen stylus. But intoxicated by the Galaxy S6's flashy design, Samsung chooses form over function in ways that aren't really necessary on a phablet, and some of the new Note's flagship features are incremental enough that I don't see a big reason for Galaxy Note 4 owners to upgrade. Design and Physical FeaturesA quick note:

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 vs Apple iPhone 6 Plus – Samsung Biggest War This Year

As you are probably aware, the biggest companies on the smartphone market are Samsung and Apple, the two companies have been in rivalry for years. Samsung will very soon release another device on the market, the phablet Galaxy Note 5. This phablet is the combination of a smartphone and a tablet, which for some will be an advantage and for some a disadvantage. But so is Apple's latest device, so the Note 5 will bring some competition to the iPhone 6 Plus. Let's see what these two phablets can do for the best user experience. Design The winner in the design category is usually a matter of personal preference. There is no way we can be objective about the look of the phablets, but we'll give you the facts so you can decide for yourself. The devices are quite similar in appearence, the iPhone 6 Plus being a tad larger than the Galaxy Note 5. As for body, Samsung's device is curved on the back, while Apple's is curved on the sides. Another factor in your decision

Why We’re Jealous of Chinese Smartphones

Aug. 18, 2015 12:37 p.m. ET Hong Kong We're not using our phones to their full potential. That we learned earlier this month at Converge, the Journal's Asian tech conference, where we met Chinese entrepreneurs, colleagues and friends—and of course immediately asked to play with their smartphones. Sure, Americans get the best new handsets from Apple first. But in China, there are ways of living your life through a smartphone that left us jealous. China has even figured out a business model to legitimately stream the current season "Game of Thrones" on your phone, free. What's China's edge? Technology is often just cheaper, allowing for more frequent phone swaps. Then there's the world's largest Internet culture—some 649 million wired people, 86% on phones—who make an incredible test base for new ideas. Many young people leapfrogged over laptops right to smartphones as their main computing device, so pho

Samsung prepares for mobile payments

NEW YORK — Samsung hopes its new mobile-payment service will let you leave your wallet at home. It's a claim that Samsung Pay's rivals — Apple Pay and Google's Android Pay — aren't able to make because they work with fewer merchants. Those rival services require merchants to have newer payment equipment with wireless technology known as near-field communication. Samsung Pay can mimic the old-school magnetic signals produced by credit-card swipes. That means it should work with most existing equipment. Nonetheless, most people won't leave their wallets home. Plastic cards aren't difficult to carry around and hand over, so there isn't an urgency to sign up for any of these services. And although Samsung Pay works with more merchants, acceptance isn't universal because of technical and behavioral constraints. Samsung Pay will make its debut in South Korea on Thursday. It will start in the U.S. on Sept. 28, with a test period beginning on Aug. 25. Sa

Samsung launches a flip phone with dual displays and Snapdragon 808 SoC

Just a couple of days after launching its high end Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+, Samsung has released another phone for the Chinese market. The phone with the model number G9198, is basically the first Samsung Android smartphone with a flip out form factor, sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC. The Samsung flip phone will come with a dual 3.9-inch SuperAMOLED display having a WXGA resolution of 1280 x 768  pixels. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC will be paired with 2GB of RAM. It will most likely come with Android Lollipop 5.1 OS with the Touchwiz UI. Image: Gforgames The phone will also sport a 6MP camera in the front, which has a higher megapixel count than even Samsung's flagship phones. On the rear side you will get a 16MP camera with an f/1.9 aperture which is the same as that seen on the Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5 and even the Galaxy A8. On the connectivity front, you get LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 and so on. The phone is powered by a 2,020mAh battery an

Samsung Galaxy A8 first look: This slim phone packs in impressive features

Samsung has just released its latest A-series handset called the Galaxy A8 in the Indian market for Rs 32,500. Launched in China last month, the A8 will be the top of the line phone in Samsung's A-series of metal frame phones. Samsung had launched the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 earlier this year. So here are our first impressions of the slimmest Samsung handset. Build Quality and Design As we said earlier, the Galaxy A8 is the slimmest phone from the Korean giant. Measuring just 5.9mm, it is indeed quite slim. However it is not the slimmest smartphone around. But the metal frame and some thoughtful tapering design on the sides, not only makes the phone look elegant but also helps with the grip. There are no sharp edges that will bother you when you hold the phone in your hand. Although the press statement says that it is a metal unibody, we noticed that the non-removable rear-cover is plastic, although the transition from metallic frame to the plastic cover is really u
