Samsung may have its Galaxy S9 series of smartphones ready by March

Samsung has been Apple's strongest rival for years and the company isn't looking to give that distinction up anytime soon.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 series of smartphones could come earlier than expected next year. According to Bloomberg, Samsung is eyeballing February to announce the new flagship and March as a release date. This puts the Galaxy S9 introduction a full month earlier than last years Galaxy S8 models. From the sounds of it, the new S9 lineup will not change much in terms of aesthetics. The S8 styling will likely remain but there will be camera improvements and obviously processor improvements. One rumor is Samsung will finally have the fingerprint sensor built into the screen rather than on the back.

The South Korea-based technology giant plans to introduce the new models, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, as early as late February and release the devices as early as March, according to people familiar with the matter. That schedule would be a month earlier than for the current Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. The new phones will be similar to the current Galaxy models, but include upgraded camera systems, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private.

The new Galaxy S9 series will certainly be aiming at the iPhone X in hopes to lure potential buyers its way. The Galaxy Note8 is already a formidable piece of hardware. But I guess it never hurts to attack from multiple sides in the smartphone market. Samsung is also developing its own smartspeaker, which we reported this morning. The Bixby speaker will be looking to compete with Apple's HomePod but also Amazon's Echo and Google Home.
