Samsung has reportedly dropped the under display fingerprint sensor from the final specifications of the Galaxy S9. The company will instead place the fingerprint sensor at the back like existing models.
Samsung has decided to drop the under display fingerprint sensor from its 2018 flagship Galaxy S9 smartphone. According to The Korea Herald, Samsung will instead place the fingerprint sensor at the back of the device on both the S9 and S9 Plus. The approach will be similar to existing flagships Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8.
This new report comes just days after a Samsung patent suggested that the Galaxy S9 will include a front-facing fingerprint sensor embedded under the display. Samsung is said to have finalised the specifications for the Galaxy S9 duo and the pilot production reportedly began this October. The mass production of the smartphone is expected to begin in December.
The new report says Samsung tried to embed a fingerprint sensor under the display, but failed to do so in time due to technical difficulties. With the bezels on the device shrinking and screen-to-body ratio getting higher, Samsung seems to be struggling to find places to put sensors and modules that were previously housed under the bezels. Most reports suggest that even Apple tried to embed a fingerprint sensor under the display of iPhone X, but failed to get the technology right and instead decided to ditch the biometric technology altogether.
Samsung is not giving up on under display fingerprint recognition technology, which is expected to debut first on the Galaxy Note 9. Earlier, KGI Securities had suggested that the Galaxy Note 9 and not Galaxy S9 will be the first Samsung smartphone to feature an under display fingerprint sensor. "Samsung won't get rid of fingerprint sensors in its handsets, as there many services and platforms running based on the technology," an industry watcher who wished to be unnamed told The Investor.
Qualcomm is the only technology company to have demonstrated a working prototype of an under display fingerprint sensor. However, the technology is not available commercially yet and is expected to become mainstream only in the second half of 2018. Samsung, on the hand, is also expected to launch Galaxy Note 9 codenamed Crown with under display fingerprint sensor in August next year.
