Bug in top smartphones could lead to unstoppable malware, researcher says

The iPhone is among the phones affected, though a recent patch addresses the problem. Photograph: Kiichiro Sato/AP A recently patched bug found in the chips used to provide wifi in iPhones, Samsung Galaxies and Google Nexus devices could be used to build malware which jumps unstoppably from device to device, according to Nitay Artenstein, the researcher who discovered the flaw. Affected users should update their phones' operating systems immediately, to iOS 10.3.3 (released 20 July) or the July security update for Android, which contain fixes for the flaw. Dubbed Broadpwn, the vulnerability was revealed in detail for the first time on Thursday at the Black Hat information security conference in Las Vegas. It works by taking advantage of a number of specific flaws in wifi chips made by the component company Broadcom, ultimately allowing an attacker to write programs directly on to the chip, seizing control of it. The vulnerability was particularly special, interesting an

Full Samsung Galaxy S8 Active details leak reveal one seriously tough smartphone

Images of slides relating to the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active have leaked online on Chinese site Weibo. They reveal the upcoming phone's full list of specs. Earlier this week we saw leaked images of the phone which showed a flat display, compared to the curved screen of its Galaxy S8 and S8+ siblings, now we have the final piece of the puzzle before the S8 Active's official launch. The Active shares much of the same DNA as the standard Galaxy S8, but has been beefed up in some areas to give it its tougher status. For a start, it's larger in height, width and depth than the S8. This more than likely to accommodate the extra casing which is MIL-STD-810G certified, for protecting against shocks, bumps and extreme climatic conditions. Like the S8, it is IP68-rated for water and dust-resistance. 1/3Weibo As we previously heard, the Galaxy S8 Active does indeed have a 4,000mAh battery, which should help it last longer than the regular S8, although the slides don't

New rumor says Samsung Pay could be heading to non-Samsung phones

Samsung is looking to vastly expand the availability of Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay is limited to the company's flagship devices and select mid-range models, but that may not be the case for much longer. According to Gadgets 360, Samsung held "internal talks within the company and with OEMs" to bring Samsung Pay to non-Samsung devices. The key difference between Samsung Pay and Android Pay is that the former supports both NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission). MST mimics a card swipe, making Samsung Pay compatible with POS machines that don't have NFC built-in. The technology is enabled by a proprietary chip that's built into the rear panel of devices like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy A7 2017, and it looks like Samsung wants to integrate the chip in other manufacturers' devices. It would certainly be a welcome move — Samsung Pay works at most offline retailers — but it's hard to see other manufacturers integrating Samsung's proprietar

Google and Samsung smartphone owners are now spending as much in-app as iPhone owners

On average, Galaxy and Pixel device owners generated between $0.21 to $0.54 in in-app revenue in June 2017, meanwhile the highest average revenue per daily active user generated by iPhone users was $0.36 during the month. This is a significant shift in app user spending: In 2016, iOS users spent two-and-a-half times more than Android use

Motorola just made its biggest U.S. smartphone push in years, but it probably won't matter

Motorola announced the Moto Z2 Force on Tuesday, a new flagship Android smartphone that will be available in the U.S next month. The Moto Z2 Force offers a "shatterproof" display that won't crack or damage when you drop it, Motorola says. It also has the latest Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, the same that's in Samsung and LG's newest phones. It's entering a crowded Android market dominated by Samsung, which has a much more attractive edge-to-edge form factor, as well as unlocked entrants from companies like Essential, the company started by Android's founder Andy Rubin. HTC, once praised by reviewers for its fantastic phones, is trying to make a comeback in the U.S. Even BlackBerry, long left for dead and now back on the market thanks to a licensing deal with TCL, is trying to sell Android phones. The Moto Z2 Force is a big deal, though, because unlike other devices this one is going to be available from every major U.S. carrier. Motorola,

Apple is working on a major change for future iPhones, and Samsung is in trouble

Samsung turned in a huge holiday quarter last year despite the Galaxy Note 7 debacle that cost the company billions in lost sales and cleanup expenses. The South Korean consumer electronics giant then followed up that fantastic performance with an even bigger first quarter, and unaudited results suggest the second quarter was Samsung's most profitable quarter ever. Sure, strong sales of smartphones like the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have helped. But the real story here is Samsung's strength across its various component businesses. Sales of memory chips, processors, display panels, and other key components have been soaring lately, and Apple's iPhone 8 will play a huge role in pushing Samsung's earnings to new heights. As has been the case with various Apple partners in the past, however, this gravy train won't last forever, and Apple is reportedly working on a major change for future iPhones that could lead to tens of billions in lost sales for its top rival,

Samsung Galaxy Note8 with Infinity Display and improved Bixby support launching on August 23

Samsung Mobile has started sending out media invites with the tagline 'Do bigger things' indicating the launch of Galaxy Note 8 smartphone. The smartphone is the successor to last year's ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. Samsung will announce the Galaxy Note 8, its successor to the ill-fated Note7 smartphone on August 23. The South Korean smartphone maker has started sending out media invites for an event in New York where it will launch the Note 8. The invite comes with the tagline 'Do bigger things' and shows a smartphone with Samsung's Infinity Design and S-Pen stylus. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is rumoured to be the most expensive smartphone yet from the company. The handset will borrow the design element first seen on company's flagship Galaxy S8 series and pair it with Note specific features like an improved S Pen. The handset is rumoured to sport a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display with dual curved edges and taller 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The s

Samsung announces an Unpack event for 23 August; Note8 launch?

Samsung has officially started sending out press invites for an Unpacked event to be held in New York on 23 August. It is likely that the company plans to reveal the much-anticipated Galaxy Note8 range of phablets. The alleged Samsung Galaxy Note8 The image on the invite is very reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S8 range launch that was used earlier. Although a major difference is in the orientation of the invite. The image also disproves the theory that the Note8 would have had a larger forehead bezel than the chin. It also means that the upcoming phablet flagship will most likely feature an Infinity Display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 or higher. Galaxy Note Pro: Why Samsung should sell a $1500 phone

What happens when you unleash Samsung's design, scale and dominance in the ultra high-end market? In 2014, Samsung achieved something that few in the working tech media had the remaining capacity to feel: surprise. It did this at a relatively subtle launch event in New York City, inside the building that would become its flagship showcase, Samsung 837. The product was the Galaxy Note Edge, which debuted alongside the company's real fall flagship, the Note 4. The Note Edge was essentially a Note 4 with one side of its display a cascade of OLED and glass that, impossibly, met the metal bezel and disappeared. It was amazing and ridiculous and, unsurprisingly, not particularly useful. But it didn't matter: people coveted this aspirational device, which was more expensive and harder to obtain than anything else from Samsung at the time. More importantly, the curved display technology that debuted in the Note Edge has since informed and, now, completely altered the tr

Samsung extracting every penny on its Galaxy Note 7 cost recovery

There is a mountain of costs required to get a smartphone to consumers. There's an even bigger one in having to take away those phones from said consumers. Samsung found itself on the end of that situation with its fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 and is intent on recouping at least some of those costs any way it can. One way has been to release a refurbished Fan Edition of the Note 7 using devices collected in the mess of recalls from the original run and placing smaller batteries in them. And if it runs into some devices can't be salvaged for that purpose, it'll pick away at the parts to sell them or the precious metals inside of them. The chaebol announced that it expects to grab 157 tons of rare metals from the phones. Most come in the form of whole parts that can be repurposed in other devices or sold on the market. It'll be the materials that can wreak environmental havoc that will need the most care, like cobalt and manganese. Environmental activist group Greenp eace h

Reminder: Last year Samsung phones started exploding, but now many see them as the leader

Apple let their main competitor off the hook by releasing a new iPhone last year that had few customers excited, elevating the expectations for the rumored iPhone 8 I will try really hard not to make this another Apple bashing story, there have been plenty of those here and other publishing websites recently. But I had a few thoughts as we are in the dog days of summer, before the fall release of the new iPhones, and Samsung's release of Galaxy Note 8. My thought is this: how the hell did Apple completely blow their opportunity to stick a dagger into Samsung? Last year, if you recall, Samsung was in the news for their exploding cell phones. In early September —right before the release of the new iPhones, I might add — Samsung was having to deal with the news that a customer had their Galaxy Note 7 blow up in their Jeep. Within weeks, the company's new phone was being banned by major airlines, and the FAA issued a statement: In light of recent incidents and conce

Watch This! Samsung Bixby: Full Voice Control

If you have a Samsung Galaxy S8 then this should interest you. Even if you don't, it's an example of how far along voice control systems are coming. Bixby is available with the Samsung Galaxy S8 range of smartphones, although the system is not complete yet. Its functions now appear to be growing fast, as the following video shows. The system is unlike other mobile assistants that simply feed search results or switch to related apps quickly. Bixby is meant to help you become more efficient at using your phone. The end goal is to make it so you can access any feature of the phone. When Bixby is complete, you'll be able to complete any action with your voice that you can through the screen. Bixby: gimmick or useful tool? It's easy to dismiss these new mobile assistants as gimmicks. Yet I feel this video shows they can be very useful when you are aware of their potential. My mind instantly goes to seeing Bixby as an accessibility tool. I can see Bixby and

Samsung’s Bixby Assistant Is New Headache For Galaxy S8 Owners, LG Announces Mid-Range Smartphones

Ever since the Galaxy S8 came out, Samsung has been trying to push Bixby onto owners. Samsung appears determined to make Galaxy S8 owners use its Bixby voice assistant. The latest software update to the T-Mobile version of Samsung's flagship phone disables third-party apps from customizing its "Bixby button," according to a recent report from Android Police . It's not yet clear if a similar update will come to the Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T versions of the Galaxy S8. Nevertheless, the update continues a months-long back and forth between Samsung, which has struggled to get Bixby off the ground in the US, and hardcore Galaxy S8 owners, many of whom have expressed frustration over their devices having a dedicated physical button with limited functionality. To recap, Samsung released the Galaxy S8 in the US in late April. One of its leading features was intended to be Bixby, a voice assistant in the vein of Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, except
