Samsung Uploads Galaxy S8 Tutorial Videos To Help Users Understand Basic Features Of The New Smartphone

Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ released a week ago and users all over the world are pleased with the performance, design, and efficiency of the latest flagships from the South Korean company. However, one of the major issues that owners may encounter is effectively accessing and utilizing the functionalities the two handsets support. For new users, the experience may be overwhelming and, therefore, Samsung Mobile uploaded a series of tutorial videos on YouTube, which are targeted toward Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners. Tutorial Videos: What They Reveal About Smartphones' Functions On Thursday, April 27, Samsung Mobile uploaded 11 such tutorial videos on its YouTube channel, each of them dealing the different features and functions the Galaxy S8 series owners can take advantage of. The first couple of videos primarily deal with the design aspect of both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. They highlight the revolutionary bezel-less display of the phones along with the p

Smartphone Shipments Rise In 2017 As Samsung, Xiaomi Corner Market Share

The Indian smartphone market had seen Samsung as the table topper for a long time now. As you can see above, Samsung's market share fell 1.0 percentage points (from 23.8 percent to 22.8 percent) as it shipped the same number of smartphones: 79.2 million. Stung by the suspension of the Galaxy Note 7 phablet, Samsung still managed to take up 18.5 per cent of the market in the fourth quarter of a year ago. Apple came in second with shipments reaching 51.6 million units, up slightly from a year earlier. Huawei secured its reputation as a manufacturer of premium smartphones with the P and Mate Series, and continues to build on its strong presence in the lower priced market segments, in the main with its Y Series and Honor Brand, according to IDC. But at least compared to the same timeframe of 2016, worldwide Q1 numbers were surprisingly on the rise, according to preliminary International Data Corporation (IDC) research, from 332.9 to 347.4 million units respectively. It has sh

As AT&T warns of permanently lower smartphone upgrade rates, Samsung lifts global Q1 smartphone sales above expectations

Samsung reported its highest quarterly profit in three years, a noteworthy figure considering the company's highly touted Galaxy S8 smartphone was released after the close of the first quarter. The company's performance indicates it is moving past its disastrous recall of the sometimes-exploding Galaxy Note 7, and also served to help raise worldwide smartphone shipments by 4.3%, according to research firm IDC—a figure that was above the firm's first-quarter forecast of 3.6% growth. "The first quarter smartphone results further prove that the smartphone industry is not dead and that growth still exists," said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers, in a release. "We believe the industry will show some rebound in 2017, and the strong first-quarter results certainly support this argument. However, despite that somewhat rosy outlook for the global smartphone industry, recent commentary from AT&T coul

Samsung's refurbished Galaxy Note 7 rumored to launch at the end of June

Last month, Samsung confirmed that it will sell refurbished versions of the Galaxy Note 7 in select parts of the globe. The company hasn't revealed any other details on its release plans, but today a new report claims to have more info. Samsung is planning to release its refurbished Galaxy Note 7 in South Korea at the end of June, reports ETNews. The device is expected to cost 700,000 won ($616 USD), which is a drop from the Note 7's original price tag of 989,890 won ($870 USD). This refurbished Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be called the Galaxy Note 7 R. The device will likely offer the same features as the original Note 7, including a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 Super AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, and 12-megapixel rear camera. However, it'll reportedly have a smaller battery, packing a 3200mAh battery rather than the 3500mAh battery found in the original model that suffered from overheating due to battery issues. Unfortunately for those of us not in South Korea, it's uncl

Samsung and LG smartphone displays with 4 curved edges under development?

Samsung's Galaxy S8 smartphone features dual curved edges, with the display bending over the left and right sides of the display giving the phone a bezel-less design along its longest sides. But future smartphone displays might have curves along all four edges, enabling device makers to build phones with nearly nothing but screen on the front. According to a report from Etnews, both Samsung and LG are working on OLED displays with four curved edges. Right now the companies are reportedly dealing with lamination technology that doesn't support four curved edges, resulting in "blind spots" where touch doesn't work at the corners of the display. So it's unlikely that we'll see any phones with curves along all edges until the kinks are worked out, which could take another year or longer. This news comes at a time when Apple is reportedly working on the first iPhone with an OLED display, but that smartphone is expected to feature a flat display

Samsung Galaxy S8 Torture Test: An Easily Breakable Smartphone

If anything is certain, dropping the Samsung Galaxy S8 on the sidewalk is a bad idea. The folks over at SquareTrade, a company that offers warranties on electronics and appliances, tortured the Galaxy S8 in a video published on Monday, subjecting it to a series of tests to discover how it would hold up against falls on pavement and other beatings. It found that the Galaxy S8's glass design makes it vulnerable to serious cosmetic damage. In its testing, which CNET earlier reported on, SquareTrade started first with a "face drop test," in which it drops the handset face-down on the pavement at a height of six feet. On just the first fall, the smartphone's display glass came loose and cracks dotted the screen. It was a similar result on the Galaxy S8's glass back, which was also dropped at a height of six feet. After the fall, the handset's backplate had "spiderwebbing" glass cracks and other dings. Get Data Sheet, Fortune's technology newsl

Samsung Galaxy S8: Top 5 Reasons To Wait Before You Order The Smartphone

The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ handsets are available in the U.S. from April 21 onwards. Many people have already preordered the device and some have been lucky enough to get the handset before the promised release date. However, cautious buyers are waiting for the early reviews and impressions before committing to the new flagships from the South Korean company. The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ are expensive devices and consumers like to weigh the pros and cons before making the purchase. Here are the top five reasons why consumers may want to refrain from picking up either of the handsets just yet. Galaxy Note 7 Debacle Samsung's reputation arguably took a huge hit after the release of the Galaxy Note 7. The smartphone was deemed to be highly dangerous because of the exploding battery. Samsung went on to recall the product twice before completely taking the phablet off the market. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are the first major smartphones from the company since i

With the Galaxy S8, Samsung grabs the smartphone design crown

How wrong I was. Ever since Samsung first unveiled the Galaxy S8 late in March, I've had to eat my words. At first, a phone with a tall, 18.5:9 aspect ratio seemed to be a strange design decision, but it was the right one. Despite its massive screen size, the S8 is basically the same width as phones with much smaller displays. Keeping the S8 relatively narrow was probably the most important design decision Samsung made. The S8 measures 68.1mm wide, a scant 1mm wider than the iPhone 7. This size makes using the S8 with one hand absolutely a reasonable prospect, something I didn't imagine when hearing about a device with a 5.8-inch screen. It's something you really need to hold to appreciate. I can't overstate how that completely changed my view on the S8. Don't get me wrong, it's still a Large Phone and not everyone will be able to use it comfortably in one hand. The tall aspect ratio also makes reaching UI elements at the top of the display challenging, fo

Google Play Music becomes the default music app on Samsung phones and tablets

Samsung customers will get a three-month trial and ability to upload 100,000 songs to Play Music. Google has partnered with Samsung to offer Google Play Music as the default music player on the South Korean manufacturer's phones and tablets, starting with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, which are going on sale in the U.S. starting today. The partnership includes exclusive features for Samsung customers, including a three-month trial to Play Music. The offer is available globally, but is limited to new subscribers and not current Play Music customers. Samsung customers also have the ability to upload and stream 100,000 songs from their own music collection into Play Music, or double the storage capacity usually offered to customers. Google is also touting integration with Bixby, Samsung's personal assistant on the Galaxy S8. When the feature goes live later this spring, you'll be able to ask Bixby to play your favorite tunes on Play Music. Google's streaming m

Xiaomi Mi 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 (Smartphone Showdown)

The Xiaomi Mi 6 is the fourth Snapdragon 835 smartphone to be announced after the Galaxy S8, Sony Xperia XZ Premium and Sharp Aquos R. But since the Xperia XZ Premium is not expected to ship before May and the Sharp Aquos R will most likely be limited to Japan and a few other markets, the Galaxy S8 and Xiaomi Mi 6 are the only two models who are going to see wider availability. That's why we thought comparing the Xiaomi Mi 6 to the Galaxy S8 would be helpful for those interesting in bringing a Snapdragon 835 flagship into their lives. Design and Display 5.8-inch "Infinity Display" with 2960 x 1440 resolution vs 5.15-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution When it comes to the new Xiaomi Mi 6, don't expect any mind-blowing design changes à la Xiaomi Mi MIX. Instead Xiaomi preservers the Mi 5 look and feel. The new phone takes advantage of a glass back that curves along all four ages and a metal frame. As for the Galaxy S8, it's also a device mos

This Chinese smartphone has similar specs as the Samsung Galaxy S8 for almost $400 less

The Xiaomi Mi 6.Xiaomi Chinese electronics company Xiaomi on Wednesday unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Mi 6. Per usual for a Xiaomi phone, it appears to pack powerful hardware at a relatively affordable price. More specifically, the Mi 6 runs on a Snapdragon 835 chip — the latest entry in Qualcomm's line of mobile processors, which recently debuted with Samsung's Galaxy S8 phone — along with a healthy 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage space by default. (There's an option with 128 GB of storage, too.) Like many recent high-end phones, there's also a 12-megapixel dual-camera setup on the back. A decent-sized 3,350 mAh battery, stereo speakers, and USB-C charging port round out the spec sheet. Xiaomi It all points to a phone that should be competitive, performance wise, with the highest-end Android phones of the year. The kicker, though, is that it'll cost half as much: Xiaomi says the entry-level Mi 6 will start at 2,499 yuan (about $365) when i

Samsung launches Galaxy C7 Pro smartphone for Rs 27990

Growing demand for more firepower from devices such as smartphones and servers have also helped push up margins for Samsung and its rivals in recent quarters. Over at Samsung headquarters meanwhile, the company reported preliminary operating profit of 9.9 trillion won ($8.7 billion) for the first quarter of 2017, a jump of nearly 50% from a year ago. In their guidance, Samsung also say they expect consolidated sales for Q1 2017 to reach approximately 50 trillion Korean won ($44.19 billion). To give this some context, this would become Samsung's second highest quarterly operating profit ever, beaten only by its 10.16 trillion won (~$9.34 billion) in Q3 of 2013. The hefty profits highlight Samsung's resilience after the embarrassing recall of its fire-prone Note 7 smartphone previous year. Her close confidante Choi is also on trial for forcing top South Korean firms, including the tech giant, to "donate" almost US$70 million to non-profit foundations w

Galaxy S8 to beat the S7 in sales, Samsung says

Alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus phones, Samsung has also introduced Bixby, the flagship phones' new AI assistant. After rolling the security update for two of its smartphone, Samsung is rolling out the same feature for one more handset. Along with faster usage, the Galaxy S8 uses a new feature called "DeX" for docking capabilities that illustrate a desktop once placed on a separate USB-C equipped dock. This was three months after the smartphone's first launched at United States carriers. The S8 also sports a voice assistant meant to rival Siri and Google Assistant. Moreover, previous year the 12 MP camera that found its way in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge uses two sensor models - either Samsung's own S5K2L1 ISOCELL unit, or a piece by Sony, marked as IMX260. The Note 7 pushed the engineering envelope with its battery, which contributed to a series of spontaneous smartphone combustions. There are several things that this new setup could improve for us

Samsung Pay officially launched in India - Know how it works

To bring Samsung Pay in India, Samsung has partnered with American Express and is mulling over exploring opportunities with giants such as Visa and MasterCard as well. "We're excited to partner an industry leader such as Samsung to provide a digital payment experience that is both simple and secure for cardholders in India", Singh said. There was a sudden growth in the cashless payment starting November. Samsung Pay enables customers to make payments right from their Samsung smartphones. Although the payment process is very easy, there is still a lot to know about the service which is the first of its kind. The service essentially allows users to make their cards contactless. To operate it, users have to link their bank account and card with the Samsung Pay app. This eliminates the use of card and keeps your payment information discreet. In the US, Samsung Pay is available on the company's latest Galaxy S smartphones, as well as the Galaxy Note 5. Samsung Note

Samsung says Galaxy S8 preorders exceed expectations

Seoul: Pre-orders for tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's flagship Galaxy S8 smartphones have been better than expected so far, the South Korean firm's mobile business chief Koh Dong-jin said on Thursday. Koh also told reporters during a media event in Seoul the S8, which some analysts believe will set a new first-year sales record for Samsung and help the firm recover from the costly collapse of the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7, will be the safest smartphone to date for Samsung. Devs are working on making Gear VR compatible with other smartphones

The Samsung Gear VR is great, but those who want to enjoy it would need a Samsung phone. The VR experience itself isn't special technology wise, but Samsung does have one of the better headsets out there, and they do have various exclusive VR experiences. It seems you might not have to have a Samsung device to enjoy that side of the tracks, though. One developer at XDA was able to get the Samsung Gear VR working with his LG V20. The process involves editing a build.prop file and adding all the prerequisite apps the Gear VR needs. It's not quite that simple right now, of course, with the developer only releasing his work intended for other developers to pre-bake it into their ROMs, but the eventual hope is that someone can make a flashable package to get the goods on any compatible phone and ROM with ease. There may also be inherent restrictions, such as phones needing at least 1440p resolution and being able to actually fit inside the Gear VR headset. In any case, if you&

Samsung to begin testing foldable smartphone

by Brandon Russell | April 12, 2017 As Samsung gears up to release the Galaxy S8, the company is already looking toward the future. According to multiple reports out of Korea, Samsung has begun production on a dual-screen device that can be folded for increased portability. The company is rumored to be making up to 3,000 units to test over the summer. ETNews reports the prototype scheduled for testing won't contain a single screen that can be folded. Rather, the point of Samsung's pilot program is to see if there are use-cases for a device with two displays that sit side-by-side. The prototypes being built for testing will contain two 5-inch OLED screens that are connected with a single hinge, according to reports. This isn't the first time manufacturers have explored the dual-screen form factor. The Kyocera Echo, for example, contained two screens and could be folded, but it was marred by issues, including poor battery life. But the potential was clear

Despite weak high-end Q1 sales, Samsung is back in the smartphone market’s lead already

It didn't take a rocket scientist to piece the puzzle together, and understand high-end Galaxy phones hardly sold like hotcakes this past calendar quarter, what with the Note 7 debacle, an all-time low percentage of the company's total shipment tally, and chips highlighted as Samsung's main profit driver by many trusted analysts. Still, after a holiday season won narrowly by Apple, the Galaxy S8 makers returned to the top global brand spot, comfortably beating iPhones yet again. According to TrendForce calculations, a little over 26 percent of the world's handhelds shipped to consumers between January and March 2017 were Samsungs, up from an 18.5 percent market share the previous quarter. But if the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge couldn't lead to the industry's only sequential volume growth due to "seasonality" and age, what Galaxy "stars" did? Why, the "economically priced, high-performing" J series, obviously, which should keep the chaebol

Samsung Galaxy S8 vs Google Pixel XL (Smartphone Showdown)

Google's next-gen Pixel 2 will be out in a few months and if the rumors are true the phone will probably come equipped with a curved display just like the recently released Galaxy S8. But while we wait for the Pixel 2 to become reality, we thought we'd show you how the new Samsung flagship stacks up against Google's current Pixel model. Design & Display 5.8-inch "Infinity Display" with 2960 x 1440 resolution vs 5-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution 570ppi vs 441ppi 18:5:9 ratio vs 16:9 ratio Samsung's Galaxy S8 is a gorgeous looking phone – however, it is also extremely fragile. The phone is made almost entirely out of glass – aluminum frame aside – and despite the Gorilla Glass protection on the back, Galaxy S8 owners will probably have to opt for a protective cover to go with the device. As for the Pixel XL, the handset sports a sturdier aluminum unibody with rounded edges and 2.5D curved glass. Moving on to scree

Samsung Galaxy J3 Pro smartphone with 5″ AMOLED Display & 2GB RAM launched in India

Internally, it is powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core Spreadtrum processor along with which we also get 2GB of RAM. The Chinese variant which was sold there had a 1.2 Ghz processor only, and this is comparatively better than that. The smartphone has 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded via a microSD card upto 128GB. However, talking a

Samsung Display Reveals at Trade Event that Foldable Smartphones will be delayed until 2019 at Minimum

In early February Patently Apple reported that Samsung was holding a special closed door meeting with partners at the Mobile World Congress event to give partners a sample foldable smartphone in exchange for feedback; feedback required to figure out product demand so that they could more accurately estimate how many foldable displays to manufacture for the following year. We commented in that report that reality would suggest such a device wouldn't make it to market for another 20-24 months at best, putting it into 2019.   If the feedback from Samsung customers would have been very positive, Samsung would have aimed to deliver new foldable smartphone displays for 2018. So how did that private meeting go? It seems it didn't do go according to plan.   Today we learn that Samsung Display's principal engineer, Kim Tae-woong, stated at a display trade show held in Seoul that "Because the bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to dev
