Samsung is bringing RCS messaging to its phones following NewNet acquisition

All Galaxy phones running Marshmallow and above will get RCS messaging. Samsung acquired RCS operator NewNet Canada back in November, and the South Korean manufacturer is now integrating NewNet's technologies into its phones. To that effect, the company is expanding RCS services to include "RCS-enabled devices, native/downloadable device clients, cloud-based RCS application servers, an interconnectivity hub among operators and a third-party monetization platform." The company's RCS solution will be available on all Galaxy phones running Marshmallow and above. Samsung's RCS solution features group chats, video calls, and large file transfers, similar to the likes of WhatsApp and Hangouts. Samsung also mentions that its service will support interconnectivity among other RCS-enabled operators, leading to a seamless experience for customers. Its solution is compliant with the GSMA RCS spec, and Samsung has said that it is partnering with Deutsche Telek

With Galaxy S8 release imminent, new Samsung ads promise its phones won’t explode anymore

Remember that time a Samsung smartphone exploded and burned a man's house down? Or how about that time a Samsung phone exploded and set someone's Jeep on fire? There are plenty more stories where those came from, and these incidents ultimate forced Samsung to issue the biggest global recall that the cell phone industry has ever seen. Samsung's defective battery design made its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones unsafe to use, and it had to cancel the device completely in order to limit its liability and keep its customers safe from detonating phones. Now, with the release of the next-generation Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ fast approaching, Samsung has released a series of new ads in which the company wants to make it as clear as possible that its upcoming new phones aren't going to burn your house down or engulf your car in flames. Samsung's upcoming new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ were undoubtedly the elephant in the room in each of the big press conferences at this year

Samsung introduces the Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Book detachable tablets

Samsung is introducing two new tablets centered not only around productivity but also incorporates the foundations of its Galaxy model devices. Soon to hit store shelves will be the Galaxy Tab S3 along with the 10.6-inch and 12-inch Galaxy Book detachable tablet. However, the company has declined to share when pre-orders will begin, the price, and eventual availability. "What we've learned is more is better," said Samsung's senior manager, product marketing Hassan Anjum. "Consumers want to be able to do more with tablets. We're seeing the rise of the category of 2-in-1 detachable tablets…There are a lot of tablets out there, but we're seeing a shift in preference to do more in productivity. Entertainment is table stakes." While the Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Books are all focused around productivity, there are some noticeable key differences. The former is Android-based, while the latter uses Windows. Both devices come with a keyboard and an S-Pe

Samsung Introduced 10 Times The Number Of Models In 2016 Than Apple; Did It Translate To Market Share?

SAMSUNG ELECTRONIC KRW5000 (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) had a forgettable year in 2016, as it was forced to recall its flagship Galaxy Note 7 worldwide following incidences of fire hazard. Subsequently, the company halted production of the product. The South Korean company had pinned its hopes on this product to take on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL)'s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus launched in September last. Galaxy Note 7 Fiasco And Its Impact The company's decision to pull the plug on its Galaxy Note 7 is seen to impact it severely, as it derives about 45 percent of its revenues from selling smartphones. A New York Times report quoting research firm Strategy Analytics said Samsung may have lost $10 billion due to the problems associated with the Galaxy Note 7. Apart from the tangible financial losses, the company is also facing an erosion of trust in its brands. However, the decision to stop production is seen by many as a prudent move. At least, it saved the brand and prevented t

Samsung Galaxy S8+ specs leaked: 6.2-inch display, ‘dual-pixel’ camera and more

Samsung Galaxy S8+ specs leaked: 6.2-inch display, 'dual-pixel' camera and more Samsung's next-generation smartphone Galaxy S8 is slated to arrive in late March. But the specifications list of the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S8+ has already been leaked by prolific tipster Evan Blass. Blass tweeted a picture of the spec sheet of the Galaxy S8+ this afternoon, which reveals almost everything about the much-awaited smartphone.  Based on the information revealed by Blass, the Galaxy S8+ will carry a 6.2-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, or 6.1-inch when factoring in the rounded corners.  The alleged spec sheet further claims that the device will boast 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded via a microSD card.  On the camera front, the Galaxy S8+ is said to pack a 12-megapixel 'dual pixel' primary camera, and an 8-megapixel front camera.     Furthermore, the smartphone will feature 4G LTE support and come with a QHD+ s

No smartphone, LG TV and cannibal neighbour: Samsung heir’s prison life

By Sam Kim/Bloomberg, Seoul While being questioned for allegedly bribing South Korea's president, Samsung Group's Jay Y Lee is locked up at a prison notorious for housing convicted billionaires, a serial killer and the hangman's noose. That doesn't mean he's given up being the boss.Lee doesn't have a phone or computer and technically is confined to his cell almost all day, yet he's allowed to meet with lawyers in a separate room for as long as he'd like. He could use the attorneys to communicate with lieutenants at the conglomerate and stay involved in the decision-making, said Kwon Young-june, a professor who researches corporate governance at Seoul's Kyung Hee University."It's a backward culture found in a country like South Korea," Kwon said. "Executives can retain their posts even after being jailed because they also own the companies they run."Precedent is on Lee's side. Hanwha Group chairman Kim Seung-youn

Photo reveals Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus on-screen ‘Home’ button

Following yesterday's leak which gave us out first look at the on-screen "Back" button that will make its debut on Samsung's Galaxy S8 phones, we now have another image which shows off the on-screen "Home" button for the two phones. This latest leak actually shows the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus side-by-side with the Always On Displays activated. The Home button is positioned at the bottom of the display, which would allow users to quickly access the phone screen. Apparently, Samsung will be replicating functionality it already has on several of its phones by allowing users to press hard on the Home button's position (with the display off) to turn the phone on or double tap it to launch the phone's camera. Leaks which highlights on-screen navigation buttons may seem a bit drab, but they are actually quite important. Samsung isn't the only Android OEM still building phones with physical and capacitive navigational buttons, but it definitel

Soon your Samsung Galaxy's fingerprint reader will unlock your Windows 10 PC

Samsung is telling Galaxy device users they'll soon be able to use their phone's fingerprint sensor to unlock nearly any Windows 10 PC. The Samsung Flow app currently lets users unlock a Galaxy TabPro S 2-in-1 with the fingerprint sensor on a Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S6, S6 Edge and Edge+, Note 5, and A7 and A5 devices. After the Windows 10 Creators Update, however, that login feature will expand to all Windows 10 PCs that have the hardware to support it, as first reported by SamMobile. "Samsung Flow is compatible with TabPro S now. But it will support all Windows 10 PCs from Windows 10 next major update (estimated early April)," a Samsung representative said in response to a user review on Google Play. Samsung Samsung's set up requires the use of the Samsung Flow app on your phone and a special utility installed on the Windows machine to unlock. Unlocking your Windows 10 PC with your Galaxy's fingerprint reader also requires the use of Bluetooth on b

Retailers in Oman struggle with Samsung phone sales

February 19, 2017 | 9:21 PM by Gautam Viswanathan/gautam@timesofoman.com Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was launched in August 2016, only to be recalled globally two weeks later as customers complained about spontaneous combustion of the device due to faulty batteries. Muscat: Local retailers in Muscat are struggling to sell Samsung phones following the problems that Galaxy Note 7 posed to customers, a scenario further worsened by the ongoing period of austerity in Oman. Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was launched in August 2016, only to be recalled globally two weeks later as customers complained about spontaneous combustion of the device due to faulty batteries. "Earlier, even with the current economic climate, I used to ship about 10 to 15 pieces of Samsung phones a day to customers," said Basheer, who runs a phone sale and repair shop in Ruwi. "Now, I get very few customers looking to buy Samsung phones on a Friday and I am lucky if I sell even five phones.&q

Samsung Galaxy S8 Colors And Pricing Leak, Black, Gold, And Orchid Gray

Samsung Galaxy S8 Colors And Pricing Leak, Black, Gold, And Orchid Gray By Talha Amjad   /   3 hours ago Share Tweet Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year and it is a means of redemption for Samsung after what happened with the Note 7. A lot is at stake here for the company and it is safe to say that the Samsung Galaxy S8 need to be perfect in order for the company to make a comeback. But then again it was a matter of time before something bad happened and it always does. It was a good thing that Samsung handled it well and satisfied their customers. New rumors claim that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be available in Black, Gold, and Orchid Gray color options. Black and Gold are colors that we are used to when it comes to smartphones but Orchid Gray is something that we will have to see with the release of the device provided that these rumors are to be taken to heart. Other rumors hint that the upcoming smartphone from Samsung will b

Samsung's Galaxy S8 could get the brand-new Exynos 9 chip, too

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are poised to snag two firsts when it comes to the processors that power everything the phones will do. Widely rumored to be the first to use Qualcomm's promising Snapdragon 835 chip, Samsung just also teased its new house-made Exynos 9, tweeting that the chipset is coming "soon". Well, you can't get much "sooner" than the Galaxy S8, which is rumored to launch March 29. Samsung commonly stuffs its phones with one of two processors: one supplied by Qualcomm in addition to its own Exynos model. The one you get depends on which country you live in. For example, Exynos models often sell in Asia, while the US typically gets the variation with Qualcomm's chip (Qualcomm is based in California). One famous exception came with the Galaxy S6, which used Samsung's Exynos chip in all markets, pre

Smartphone maker Huawei catching up on Samsung, Apple says study

Paris: Chinese smartphone maker Huawei managed to gain ground on Samsung and Apple in terms of market share last year, following the problems encountered by the two sector giants, the Gartner consultancy group said on Wednesday. Over the year as a whole, the Chinese maker saw its sales leap by 26.7 percent, while the South Korean and US rivals both saw their sales decline by 4.3 percent, Gartner said in a study. As result, Huawei was able to increase its share of the smartphone sector to 8.9 percent in 2016 from 7.3 percent a year earlier, while Samsung saw its market share shrink by two full percentage points to 20.5 percent and Apple's contracted to 14.4 percent from 15.9 percent. "Chinese makers succeeded in winning market share over last year and Huawei now seems to be the main rival to the two giants, even if the gap remains large," Gartner analyst Annette Zimmermann told AFP. Among the other Chinese smartphone makers are OPPO, BBK Communication Equipment (

BlackBerry's Smartphone Market Share Has Reached 0 Percent

It's official -- BlackBerry has finally been pushed out of the iPhone and Android-infused smartphone market. Marking the end of an era, the Canadian mobile company's share of the smartphone market has officially reached 0.0 percent, Business Insider reports. In the fourth quarter of 2016, BlackBerry held a sliver of market share -- approximately 0.0482 percent -- and sold only 207,900 devices running on BlackBerry's operating system, according to Gartner research. Smartphone manufacturers worldwide sold 431 million units that quarter, with 352.7 million of those running on Android operating systems and 77 million on Apple iOS. Today, the amount of devices running on BlackBerry operating systems is extremely low. In the third quarter last year, BlackBerry's OS had 0.1 percent market share. Many BlackBerry devices now run on Android, though those also make up a small proportion of the overall smartphone market. Throughout 2016, BlackBerry didn't release any ne

Samsung Galaxy S8 release date nears as “photos” quell fears

A set of photo-quality renders (not actual photos) appeared this week of the Galaxy S8 to further axe fears of a cut headphone jack. Apple tossed the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 along with a few Android devices before and since – it would seem that Samsung won't follow suit. Instead, with the assistance of the images published this week, we're able to get a look at what this forward-thinking yet conservative-tech-packed smartphone is going to look like. The images in this article come from a skilled creator by the name of WaaNee – aka WoOS. They've been created – it would seem – to promote the maker's collection of wallpapers and themes. In the process of promoting these themes, WoOS has created some of the most realistic and final-looking renders of the Galaxy S8 we've seen so far. The images are apparently based on specifications leaked over the past several weeks as well as leaked schematics. The schematics likely come through model-makers for acce

Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 Smartphone with 5.5″ HD Display Spotted Online

Last year, Samsung launched quite a few smartphones under the Galaxy J series. Now, the company is working on the 2017 iterations of the Galaxy J series. The Galaxy J7 2017 with the model number SM-727VL is now listed on GFXbbench revealing the key specifications. Earlier to this, the same device with the model number SM-J727P is spotted on Geekbench. The Galaxy J7 2017 will be the successor to the last year's Galaxy J7 2016 and features few similar specifications. We expect the company to continue with the plastic body for its J-series devices. Talking about the device with the model number SM-727VL, it runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. The other variant with the model number SM-J727A is mentioned to come with the latest Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. It comes with a 5.5-inch display with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution, and we might see the company using the Super AMOLED panel as it successor. While one variant will be powered by Snapdragon octa-core p

Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus Dual SIM spotted ahead of release

We have discussed how there would be two models of the Galaxy S8 this year with the regular and Plus models. There will be Dual SIM variants as well, the first of which has been spotted with the model number SM-G955FD. The Samsung Galaxy S8 release may not end up in consumers palms until April, but that isn't going to stop the leaks from coming. Some are obviously more legitimate than others, and today's appears to be rock solid. An official support page for the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has gone live in several different locales tipping us off to a model number and one region-specific feature. SM-G955FD is the model number shown for the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. The support pages are live in three regions as well with Kazakhstan, Singapore, and India. Those are all three areas that make use of Dual SIM handsets, and we expect more regions to be added soon. Unfortunately, that's all those pages tell us as there is no mention of any additional features or the potentia

Samsung: Anadiploumeno phone in MWC, but for the few?

Where there is smoke, there is usually fire, and we do not mean that broke out at the factory Samsung SDI . They are foldable smartphones are talking about a long time and we expect to impress us. The Samsung has shown keen interest in the folding screens and the information they want to move the device in the third or fourth quarter of 2017. Therefore, if you apply the information should already be ready prototype. The new information is that the MWC Samsung will bring the prototype, which probably will only see a few. If so, then overshadowed the announcement of Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 , expected in Barcelona. Before opening the formal announcement, Samsung wants to get feedback from colleagues to see the response. No information for mass production, although when to start or how many pieces will hit the market. However, Samsung is not alone in this market, and LG has also similar projects. It remains to see what we will see in the MWC 2017 , which like every year

Samsung's Battery Factory Caught on Fire Because of Course It Did

Image: Weibo Just when you almost forgot about what a shitty time Samsung's been having, a literal garbage fire broke out at the company's battery supplier in Tianjin, China. The cause? Discarded faulty batteries. Advertisement Reuters reports that it was just a "minor fire," but we all know that this is a major "fuck you" for the company that lost a reported $5.3 billion in profits due to exploding Galaxy Note 7 phones. That extended nightmare, of course, was also caused by faulty batteries that were made by Samsung SDI, the aforementioned victim of the garbage fire. It's so far unclear if the discarded faulty batteries were related to the Note 7 debacle. The local fire department reports that the "material that caught fire was lithium batteries inside the production workshops and some half-finished products." Let's hope, for Samsung's sake, that those half-finished products were not the long-awaited Galaxy S8 dev

Samsung J2 emerges as the best selling phone in Oman

February 7, 2017 | 9:54 PM by Syed Haitham Hasan/haitham@timesofoman.com Muscat: Commonly described by customers as the best value for money phone, the Samsung J2 has emerged as the highest selling phone in Oman, according to retail stores in the country. While flagship models from Apple, Samsung and Huawei remain the most marketed phones in the Sultanate, nearly 5,000 new J2 mobiles are sold every month, according to data collected by the Times of Oman. "It is the best phone for me," said Aftab Alam, a Bangladeshi electrician who recently bought the J2 after saving money for it for four months. "It costs less but has excellent features. I use it for everything," he said, referring to the average eight megapixel rear camera and a five inch display. Costing OMR50, J2 is not the cheapest of phones but sells around 200 pieces a month in Cleopatra store alone, according to an official. A major dealer confirmed they sold 3,000-3,500 handsets a month. "It i

Samsung’s Note 7 recall prompts tough new battery regulations

Eagle-eyed inspectors will be watching over Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 and other upcoming smartphones to ensure there's no battery explosion repeat, South Korean regulators confirmed today. In the aftermath of the Galaxy Note 7 recall – which saw Samsung forced to refund every buyer of the phablet worldwide, as well as hear its flawed flagship declared unsafe at the start of every flight – battery pack safety testing has suddenly become a high-profile commitment. Now, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in Samsung's home country is weighing in too. The Ministry – which is known as MOTIE – has just completed its own investigation into the Note 7 battery fiasco. Carried out by its affiliate, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), the deep-dive concluded that it was indeed the battery that was at fault. "In the testing of damaged batteries distributed after Samsung Electronics' second recall of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, for instance,"

Samsung Galaxy C5 Pro prepares for global launch

In case you missed it, Samsung's Galaxy C5 Pro was one of three Korean smartphones (the other two were Galaxy C7 Pro and Galaxy C9 Pro) that belong to the same "family", and the only one that was supposed to launch in the Chinese market only. Still until today we have no news about this device, while the other two are already available in markets other than China. The Galaxy C5 Pro was spotted back in December at Wi-Fi Alliance with model number SM-C5010, a variant specifically designed for the Chinese market, but today, the same device was granted WiFi certification under a new code-name: SM-C501X, which probably means that it will be soon available to other countries as well, not just China. As we have previously informed you, the Galaxy C5 Pro is a mid-range smartphone that uses a Snapdragon 625 SoC along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of native storage. It packs a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display with full HD (1080p) resolution, a 16MPixels main camera and anoth

New Samsung smartphone with 3GB RAM, Android Nougat spotted on benchmarks

A new mid-range Samsung smartphone has been spotted on GFXBench with the model number - SM-G615F. The MediaTek 6757 (Helio P20) chipset is under the hood carrying a true octa-core CPU (Cortex-A53) clocked at 2.3 GHz. It got an 840 score on Single-Core and 3426 with Multi-Core. The SM-G615F features a 5.7-inch display with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This MediaTek Helio P20 pairs up with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage as per the GFXBench listing. Nintendo Switch online service price pitched at around £20Switch has copped a bit of flack for fronting a weak lineup of software at launch, But Nintendo reckons it's all pact of the plan. That's a lot cheaper than Xbox One and Playstation 4, which both charge upwards of £30-a-year for access to online gaming. GFXBench further shows that SM-G615F will feature a 12MP rear camera with auto-focus, face detection, HDR and LED flash. In the photography department, the smartphone features a 13-megapixel ca

Best Android 7.0 Nougat features for the Samsung Galaxy S7!

I've decided to try out 7.0 on the S7 for a week. On Saturday I'll be rolling the phone back to the March 6.0.1 version. For every thing I like about the 7.0 update I find 2 I hate. Let's start with what I like: - custom quick setting toggles in the notification tray. Very useful to launch some apps no matter in which screen you are. - Resolution scalling. I don't notice any difference between 1080p and QHD. I also don't notice any difference in battery life. But I like to be able to decide that. - Maintenance centre is nice. Now here's why I'm going back: - Google's idiotic "security policy" hasn't been fixed and double tap to sleep + fingerprint unlock on Nova is therefore still broken. It's bad enough the S7 doesn't have double tap to wake, not being able to have double tap to sleep is just infuriating to me. - The new notification shade is a disaster. I can choose the size of the grid when fully expanded...but not wh
