With Rs 34,300 cr revenue, Samsung undisputed India handset market leader

New Delhi, December 21 (IANS): After registering a 27 per cent growth in mobile business revenue for the financial year 2016-17 — touching a mammoth Rs 34,300 crore — Samsung has become the undisputed leader in the highly competitive and price-sensitive domestic smartphone market. "Samsung continues to be India's smartphone leader by a fair distance. We are growing across segments — premium, mid-segment and affordable," Asim Warsi, Global Vice President, Samsung India, said in a statement on Thursday. "Our ears are firmly to the ground and this helps us deliver the best smartphone experience to our consumers and that is helping us gain the trust of consumers. We will sustain and consolidate our leadership in the smartphone industry," Warsi added. With this kind of growth, Samsung has eclipsed the sales of key Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Lenovo and even the Cupertino-based giant Apple. "We continue to be the market leader in Indi

Why do Android fanboys hate admitting that Samsung copied Apple?

It's impossible to cover the mobile market without diving into the good ol' "iOS vs. Android" debate from time to time. These are the two biggest mobile platforms on the planet, so they're constantly being compared. Likewise, Samsung and Apple are the world's top two smartphone vendors, so their phones are constantly pitted against each other as well. Of course, there's another reason Apple and Samsung are often mentioned in the same breath: after entering the market, Samsung quickly grew to become the top mobile device maker on the planet thanks in large part to Apple. First, Samsung did everything it possibly could to copy Apple's iPhone and iPad. Then, it spent billions upon billions of dollars belittling Apple products in TV, online, and print advertising. Samsung spent years positioning its own devices as the cool alternative to Apple's iPhone, and its efforts paid off big time. Even now, Samsung continues to copy Apple all the time acro

Patent details upcoming Samsung Galaxy X foldable smartphone with two screens

The latest patent granted to Samsung mentions that the two displays of the phone are connected via hinges. Samsung has been working on a foldable smartphone for quite some time now. A new patent granted to the company suggests that Samsung might have something in the works similar to the ZTE Axon M. The patent has been registered with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and shows that the two displays on the device are connected via hinges. Unlike ZTE's Axon M however, the Samsung phone can close down inwards, hiding away the displays. This new patent looks completely different from the previous patents Samsung has been granted. Earlier it was reported that Samsung's president of IM Division, Ko Dong-Jin said, "We aim to launch a foldable smartphone next year". The best feature revealed by the patent is that the phone can be folded in a handheld controller like the format, similar to Nintendo 3DS. This will allow users to use one displ

Samsung's Galaxy A8 might be one of 2018's best budget phones

Samsung might have something really special here. Samsung releases a lot of phones each year, and its two standouts are typically entries in the Galaxy S and Note lines. Next year, however, we could see something pretty special in the form of the Galaxy A8 (2018). The Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8+ (2018) The Galaxy A series of devices from Samsung isn't anything new, and the main focus of it has always been on offering quality phones for not a ton of cash. The A8 and A8+ are expected to be the two most powerful Galaxy A devices released in 2018, and thanks to a recently leaked hands-on video, we've got a pretty clear picture of what to expect from them. Similar to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, the A8 and A8+ will have more similarities than differences. Both phones feature Samsung's own Exynos 7885 processor, 4-6GB RAM, 32-64GB of expandable storage, and IP68 dust/water resistance. Both devices will also have the same 16MP f/1.7 rear-facing camera, as well as a 16MP and 8M

Samsung Galaxy S9 rumors!

With the year coming to an end, many of us are already anxious about all of the new smartphones that will come in 2018. CES will be the nearest event that will display some of them, but if you're in for the flagships, you will have to wait a little longer. And seeing from this year, Samsung will most likely be the among the first companies that will present their flagship, the Galaxy S9. We've obtained some rumors about the S9, so read on to see what this device could offer. Design Design-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S9 might not be that much different from the current Galaxy S8. It will still be smooth and curved on the edges, featuring the already famous edge display on both sides. The display will most likely be a 6" one, with the same AMOLED technology found in many other Samsung smartphones. It will feature an 18:9 aspect ratio, which will make the device a sleek beauty to look at. That also means that the top and bottom bezels will be minimal, which adds to the

Samsung may have its Galaxy S9 series of smartphones ready by March

Samsung has been Apple's strongest rival for years and the company isn't looking to give that distinction up anytime soon. Image is of the Samsung Galaxy S8. The Samsung Galaxy S9 series of smartphones could come earlier than expected next year. According to Bloomberg, Samsung is eyeballing February to announce the new flagship and March as a release date. This puts the Galaxy S9 introduction a full month earlier than last years Galaxy S8 models. From the sounds of it, the new S9 lineup will not change much in terms of aesthetics. The S8 styling will likely remain but there will be camera improvements and obviously processor improvements. One rumor is Samsung will finally have the fingerprint sensor built into the screen rather than on the back. The South Korea-based technology giant plans to introduce the new models, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, as early as late February and release the devices as early as March, according to people familiar with the matter.

LG, Samsung Will Launch Middle-Tier Smartphones At CES 2018; Bring 18:9 Displays, Mobile Payments To Lower Price Points

For the flagship smartphone market, 2017 is a great year. We've seen a lot of first time upgrades, which push the performance and feature envelope even further. These upgrades provide manufacturers with a good launching pad for next year. While this year only high-end devices saw major upgrades, this will not be the case for upcoming ones. As technology matures and adoptions increase, costs will decrease. This in turn will allow manufacturers to offer today's high-end upgrades to tomorrow's middle tier customers. Samsung and LG's plans for 2018 follow a similar tune. Take a look below to find out more. While generally we like to focus on high-end devices, this time others also deserve a merit. The big smartphone upgrade for 2017 is edge to edge displays. While both Samsung and LG treated their users with the upgrade, the real winners were Apple fans. Cupertino's fanbase has protected the company long and hard against Android's accusations of living in pr

Samsung’s redesigned Galaxy S9 has reportedly been cancelled in favor of a boring update

Samsung wowed us all last year when it released the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The phones weren't particularly huge updates over their predecessors overall, but they certainly were in terms of design. Samsung ditched the home button from the front of the phones and slimmed down the bezels above and below the screen. Since Samsung's flagship phones already had barely any bezels on either side of the display, the result was an impressive screen-to-body ratio that offers a wonderfully immersive viewing experience. There's precious little doubt that the Galaxy S8 design is still among the best in the world. But there's also precious little doubt that Apple one-upped Samsung with the iPhone X, which features a best-in-class screen-to-body ratio. With this year's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, everyone expected torch to be passed back to Samsung thanks to even slimmer bezels above and below the S9's display. Unfortunately, a new report suggests the design we've seen

Has LG Given Up Smartphone Business? Samsung Rival Reportedly Shifting Focus

South Korean company LG Electronics is shifting its focus to its electric vehicle and energy businesses as its smartphone division continues to struggle in terms of sales. It was also found out that Samsung's crosstown rival has been trying to acquire an automotive light maker as it makes changes to its priorities.  LG's second-in-command Vice Chairman Koo Bon-joon revealed on Tuesday that the V30 maker will henceforth prioritize its electric vehicle  and energy businesses, and it will continue to do so in the next 30 years. "We are always putting energy, including electric vehicles, first (among new growth businesses)," Koo Bon-joon told Korea Herald. "In the next 30 years, we will be engaged in energy businesses that will look at resources such was water and air with long-term perspectives." There are speculations that LG could be planning to produce its own electric cars. Such speculations surfaced after industry sources found out that LG affiliates

New Report Breaks Down Smartphone Sales in October by Brand with Apple Crushing Samsung and all Chinese Vendors

According to a new research report providing insights into the mobile handset market sales in the month of October 2017, Apple is starting to gain momentum with iPhone 8. Both the iPhone 8 Series models captured the top two positions in the list of bestselling smartphones. Expect Apple's share to increase as iPhone X flows into sales figures from November 2017 onward.   Premium models started eating share from mid-tier models. Apple continues to dominate the Premium segment ($400+), while the mid-tier is still dominated by Vivo and Oppo.   It was interesting to note that Apple's older iPhone 6 was amazingly as popular as Samsung's latest Galaxy S8 and sold more than Oppo's leading R11 with dual 20MP cameras.   It once again proves that when you remove the nonsensical noise of 'Volume Sales' statistics, which are meaningless, the reality of brand sales statistics clearly show us why Apple is the known industry leader while explaining why the com

Samsung Down To 2.2% Of China’s Smartphone Market: Data

Samsung Electronics is now down to 2.2 percent of China's smartphone market, according to the latest data compiled by Kantar Worldpanel. In the three-month period ending October 31st, the South Korean tech giant had its performance deteriorate even more and is now on track to drop below two percentage points in the final quarter of the calendar year, as recently predicted by Strategy Analytics. Whereas China is still the world's largest smartphone market that attracted countless original equipment manufacturers in recent years, it's now showing signs of maturing as major phone makers have already established their brands and products. Save for the fact that Xiaomi managed to overtake Apple as the fourth largest smartphone vendor in the country, no major changes have been recorded over the course of this year and the big five now accounts for 91 percent of all sales in the country, a significant increase compared to 79 percent in 2016. Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaom

Samsung’s next generation of smartphones will see a massive 512GB internal storage

Samsung are looking to massively upgrade the storage capacity of next generation mobile devices. The company have now announced a new 512GB storage chip. They say that this it the first 512GB embedded flash storage solution for use in mobile devices. It offers "unparalleled storage capacity and outstanding performance for upcoming flagship smartphones and tablets". It's that tablets bit that's really got me interested. I'm actually quite happy with a phone that has only 64GB or 128GB, as long as I have a way to offload what's stored on it. For many Android phones, that's a microSD slot. For my iPhones it's the Lexar Lightning to microSD adapter. But tablets with 64GB or 128GB feels awfully claustrophobic. I need more space on those. The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded storage solution for next-generation premium smartphones by overcoming potential limitations in system performance that can occur with the use of micro SD ca

Doogee BL7000 smartphone review

Chinese smartphone makers are often criticized, avoided like the plague even, for being copycats. While there might be some truth to that, there are others who have dared to push the boundaries, venturing into territories that larger and more established brands dare not to. Xiaomi, for example, kicked off the whole bezel-less screen trend with last year's Mi Max. And then there's Doogee, whose BL "Be Long Time" series takes battery life to the extreme. But how extreme can you get without breaking your wallet or burning pockets? We take the Doogee BL7000 for a spin to give you that answer. Design The first reaction you'll most likely have when you lift the Doogee BL7000 out of its box is "wow, this is heavy!" Anyone with a 7,000 mAh battery pack will know those things don't come light. What more when it comes with a full smartphone alongside it. At 220 g, it even outweighs the iPhone 8 Plus. Your second reaction will probably be "wow

IPhone X is inferior to Samsung's new phones, Consumer Reports says

So much for the iPhone X being the best phone ever. At least according to Consumer Reports. The influential publication just released its full review of the $1,000 device, and concludes that Samsung's latest smartphones, and even the cheaper iPhone 8 series, are better options for most people. "Taken as a complete package, this phone ranked a bit lower than Samsung's S8, S8+, and Note8, mainly because of their superior battery life," Consumer Reports said. "But many longtime iPhone users aren't interested in switching to Android, so the real question for them is whether to save a few bucks — or, actually, a couple hundred — and go with an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus instead." Report: Samsung Struggles to Gain Smartphone Market Share in China

When you ask the average Western customer to name three different smartphone brands, they will almost always include Samsung in that list. In some cases, Samsung's Galaxy brand was overshadowing Android OS itself to the point where some didn't even know what Android was. The amount of work that Samsung has put into their smartphone division has definitely paid off for them as they dominate global smartphone sales quarter after quarter. However, there are some regions where Samsung actually struggles and a recent report illustrates how difficult it has been for them in China. A new report from Kantar Worldpanel focused on Apple's performance in China following the release of the iPhone X, but it also revealed that Samsung is still struggling to gain any ground in the world's largest smartphone market. This is despite the fact that Android smartphones in general continues to gain market share; during the three months ending with October 2017 we saw Android gain 4.3%

Get ready for smartphones with more storage than ever before

Getty Images Justin Denison, senior vice president of product strategy at Samsung, speaks about the during new Samsung Galaxy Note8 smartphone during a launch event for the product, August 23, 2017 in New York City. Soon you won't need to worry about running out of space on your new smartphone so quickly. Samsung said on Tuesday that it's now mass-producing 512GB flash storage chips that will enable smartphone makers to launch new smartphones that provide users with extra space for movies, music and apps. By comparison, most smartphones today -- including the iPhone X -- are capped at 256GB of storage. Some tablets, including the iPad Pro and Microsoft's Surface tablets, already offer 512GB of space for media content. Samsung says its new solution slims down the chips so that the increased storage capacity takes up the same amount of space as a 256GB chip would. The new solution is also really fast, allowing users to "store approximately 130 [10 minut

Samsung's Future Galaxy Phones Could Add Palm Reading To Display Password Hints

We've all forgotten a password at some point in our online travails, and have needed to resort to password hints to retrieve or reset said password. In most cases, these hints are easily guessed by nefarious parties using social engineering. As we're learned over the years, such breakdowns in security chains can have rather disastrous results. A patent filed [PDF] by Samsung, however, looks to take the uncertainty regarding password hints out of the equation with what is effectively a palm reading. Samsung's smartphone-based system will scan the unique lines that are spread across the palm of your hand. Once your palm is scanned, and you are authenticated as the rightful owner of the device, the phone will display incomplete characters from your password hint. The full password hint won't be given, but it should be enough to trigger your memory to input the correct answer. We don't think that we'll see such technology taking the place of first-tier authenti

Fastest-charging smartphone list: OnePlus 5T on top, iPhones struggle against Android

With so many flagship smartphones offering similar levels of performance and hardware, choosing one can come down to factors such as price and battery. Now, thanks to a study by Tom's Guide, we know which handsets stand apart from the rest when it comes to charging speeds. The tests recorded the battery life of each phone after 30 minutes and 60 minutes of charging. The handsets were turned on but the screens were off, and they started with 0 percent battery. The fastest phone was the excellent OnePlus 5T. Its 3300mAh battery was at 59 percent after 30 minutes and 93 percent—almost full—in just an hour. The majority of critics have praised the handset, and at $499, it easily won the 'Best Smartphone for less' category in our Best of Smartphones feature. While it may not be on quite the same level as flagships from Google, Samsung, and Apple, LG's recent V30 has them beat when it comes to battery charging times. Like the OnePlus 5T, it also has a 3300mAh batter

Samsung continues to torment us with gorgeous flip phones we can’t buy

Samsung is into flip phones in a big way, although you wouldn't know it to look at the decidedly hinge-less range of handsets bestowed upon the west. The company stuck it to us again on Friday by unveiling its fanciest flipper yet; albeit with a likely price tag that makes the iPhone X look like a budget phone. The Samsung W2018 has some amazing specs (and Bixby) to rival the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 ranges, and a camera with a wider aperture than that flagship pair. Related: Best smartphones Better still the 12-megapixel rear facing camera has the rarest of rarities, a varible aperture. The W2018 can switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4 depending on the light you're shooting in. Here it is in action (via Weibo) Other than that, the rear-facing camera is up there with the S8 and Note 8 handsets. Fear not though, if the variable aperture feature works well, we might end up seeing this on the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 handset, which will be unveiled earlier next y

Review: Samsung Galaxy J7 V for Verizon Wireless

This mid-range Android handset is a throwback to Samsung's heritage line of smartphones. It offers a big screen and an even bigger battery wrapped up in a plastic shell. If you're a Verizon customer and need to save some green, the Samsung Galaxy J7 V is affordable and pleasing in its own way. Here is Phone Scoop's in-depth review. Is It Your Type? The Galaxy J7 V for Verizon Wireless is an update to Samsung's mid-range device. The J7 V's looks may be somewhat dated, but the handset is far more affordable than Samsung's flagships. If you're a Samsung fan and want a simpler, cheaper smartphone the Galaxy J7 V might fit the bill. Body If you think the Galaxy J7 V looks familiar, you wouldn't be wrong. It's a bit of a throwback to the appearance of much older Samsung phones. This mid-sized slab masquerades as a metal mobile, though it's made mostly of plastic. I'd call the design conservative almost to a fault. The phone features 2.5D curv

Best overall Samsung Galaxy Note 8 See at Amazon See at Verizon See at AT&T See at T-Mobile See at Sprint From dual cameras and a Wacom-powered stylus to water resistance, wireless charging, a massive curved display and even a headphone jack, the Galaxy Note 8 packs just about everything you could possibly ask for in a modern flagship. At 1200 nits, its display is one of the brightest on the market, and it's hard to beat the combination of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chipset and a whopping 6GB of RAM. Bottom line: The Galaxy Note 8 is simply the best device Samsung has ever built. At least, until the Galaxy S9 shows its face. One more thing: Depending on where you buy it from, the Galaxy Note 8 nears $1000 outright. For all its compelling features, a thousand dollars is hard to swallow for any phone. Why the Galaxy Note 8 is the best Samsung packed everything and the kitchen sink into the Galaxy Note 8. For the absolute biggest and best that Samsung h

Samsung fires up production of second-gen 10-nm FinFET chips

by Wayne Manion — 10:30 AM on November 29, 2017 Samsung announced today that its S3 manufacturing line in Hwaseong, Korea, has started fabrication of SoCs on 10LPP, the company's second-generation 10-nm FinFET process technology. The electronics manufacturer says 10LPP allows for 10% higher performance or 15% lower power consumption compared to 10 LPE, its existing 10-nm node. Samsung says the second-generation process should lead to increased yields and reduced time in the transition from chip development to mass production. Samsung's S3 manufacturing line in Hwaseong, Korea According to the company, devices bearing SoCs built using the 10LPP process node will probably hit store shelves early next year. Samsung didn't elaborate on the nature of these SoCs, so they could be anything from in-house designs for smart watches to high-end smartphone SoCs built for the company's manufacturing partners. In addition to 10-nm production, the company expects it'll

10 Ways In Which Android Has Changed Our Digital Lives And The Way We Use Our Phones

It only seems like yesterday when I got my first Android smartphone, and my life was never the same. I'm sure you guys would remember your first Android smartphone too! Android has completely changed our lives, and we can hardly ignore Android devices anymore. Image courtesy: Pixabay Since its very inception into the market, Android has evolved to such great lengths, that it has made us alter the way we have used phones. In India, Android gained recognition around seven years back with Samsung's first Android flagship-the Galaxy S, running Android 2.1.  However, before this, we used our phones in a completely different way. We were a fan of Nokia Samsung's and Blackberry devices running on their custom operating systems, and while they were smart enough to do all the things a smartphone could, there weren't termed as the smartphones. And even with strong fan-following from these brands, people shifted to Android in a very short span of time.  Today, An

Samsung allegedly plans to make CES relevant again with new Galaxy S smartphones

What's This? Setting the tech agenda at CES. Image: Anadolu Agency/Getty Images In many ways, these days it seems the annual CES tradeshow in Las Vegas is where consumer tech goes to die. Vibrating smart jeans? Bizarre wearables? Temporary tattoo printers? Check, check, and check. All the biggest names like Apple, Microsoft, and Google have largely abandoned the event as a place for major product reveals in favor of their own press events.  Samsung, however, might be about to change all that. According to VentureBeat, the South Korea-based manufacturer is set to unveil the latest iteration in its line of Galaxy S smartphones at next year's CES in just a couple of months. That's right, this January might bring with it a sneak peek at both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Citing "someone briefed on the company's plans," the publication reports that the new phones will share the same Infinity curved Super AMOLED displays as previous models. Howeve

Samsung's best phones of the year are on sale for Black Friday

Samsung's best phones of the year, including the Galaxy Note 8, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, are all on sale for Black Friday. Amazon knocked $150 off of unlocked models of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, which are available for $575 and $675, respectively. Amazon is also selling Samsung's newest flagship device, the Galaxy Note 8, for $780. Best Buy also has similar discounts on all three models. The unlocked versions of Samsung's smartphones allow customers to pay full price for the phone and then use it on the carrier of their choice without having to sign a contract. U.S. wireless carriers also sell the phones at a discount if users sign up for a cellular plan. CNBC praised both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8 in our reviews of the phones earlier this year.
