Samsung Gear VR Provides Thrills, But Proves Virtual Reality Still Has A Long Way To Go

The first commercial version of the Gear VR, created by Oculus for Samsung, is finally available. It can only be used with the Samsung Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge+. One year ago, Samsung released an innovator's edition for the Galaxy Note 4, which was well received given that people thought by the time of the commercial version, a lot would be fixed. It hasn't been. If you use the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge, the field of view (FOV) is too small and makes the software seem as if you are looking at it through an igloo hat. This isn't much of a problem on the Galaxy Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 Edge+ since the phones are bigger. However, no matter which phone you use, your eyes will see faint black squares on each side of the lens. When you look at one of the squares directly, it disappears. This can be fixed by holding the Gear VR slightly further from the face or inserting a cotton ball on both sides by your cheeks to push the unit slightly away

The anticipated Samsung Galaxy S7 has gone through AnTuTu benchmarks, revealing the scores delivered by Samsung's newly unveiled Exynos 8 Octa 8890 SoC. The unannounced Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016) also appears to have hit the US FCC certification website, tipping its dimensions and battery capacity. A Samsung smartphone with model number SM-G9300, thought to be the Galaxy S7, is seen in a leaked benchmark running the Exynos 8890 SoC, via GSMArena. The Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890 processor was launched earlier this month. The new processor has been built on 14nm FinFET fabrication process and features Samsung's first custom-designed CPU based on 64-bit ARMv8 architecture. From the past leaks and rumours, Samsung Galaxy S7 will run Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC under-the-hood in some markets, and the newly unveiled Exynos 8890 SoC in other

Need a new smartphone? Check out these 4 awesome sub-R4000 handsets

Could you walk into a shop today and buy a smartphone for over R10 000 without flinching? Many will be able to but many more will scoff at the idea. Especially with the likes of Chinese manufacturer Xioami bringing its considerable low price heft to the market today. To our mind buying a phone that eats through your salary faster than you can spend it, is a bit silly. This year has seen manufacturers competing to bring us phones that are even cheaper but still boast a number of features that the average user will love. This might not be the case but with the influx of cheap smartphones it's hard not to think that. This can making choosing the best smartphone for you a bit difficult but never fear, we have a few pearls of wisdom for you, and four cheap handsets we've been bowled over by so far this year. The restructuring is designed to make each of the component parts of LG more nimble and quicker to respond to market conditions. The healthiest business areas for LG, according to its latest financial results are TV sales, which have experienced a resurgence over the last few months, as well as home appliances and vehicles components. Smartphones, though, are struggling. LG needs to work out how to j

BlackBerry confirms more Android-powered smartphones are coming

While news about a BlackBerry smartphone using a Samsung Exynos chipset is already out, there is more news confirming  that the Priv will not be its first and last Android smartphone. Accoridng to Htxt.africa a BlackBerry representative confirmed that the company's Priv smartphone will not be its last one. In a conversation with htxt, BlackBerry's Nader Henein, who is responsible for advanced security solutions in the Advisory Division commented, "It wouldn't be a once-off (thing). [The license to use Android] is too expensive and it is a mass market product – it is for consumers, it is for enterprise, and is really for anyone who likes the keyboard and the versatility of the operating system," Moreover Nader also said that, Google so far has been pretty supportive about BlackBerry building an Android-powered smartphone. This is surprising because BlackBerry has been taking pot shots at Google (more so with the Priv) about Google not putting sufficient effor

Why a Dad Ditched His Smartphone and Simplified His Life

Dave Batson is all about cutting the clutter, absorbing life, being present and sleeping a full eight hours. So, goodbye smartphone. Here's how he feels about it.   — Shortness of breath. Anxiety and tightness in my chest. Just a sampling of emotions I felt last night as I waited patiently at the counter of Metro PCS for my number to be ported. By no means was this an easy transaction, even though I had been contemplating a switch for months. At this very moment, I could see clearly how dependent I had become on this little device. As ridiculous as it sounds, I was experiencing the emotional and physical effects firsthand. My Samsung Galaxy S5 was surrendering to the ZTE Altair, a basic phone, and ushering in a new, simpler era in my life. In with the old, out with the new. Was I making a terrible decision? Or the best decision of my life? Only time will tell. I was late to the smartphone game, having only used one for less than two years. At the time, I could

Samsung Unveils Clamshell W2016 Smartphone with Dual Display, 16 MP Camera

Flip phones still seem to be en vogue in Asian countries as people are still nostalgic about the flip phones. Samsung decided to not to ignore these Flip phones and has given them a a go. Flip phones and slide phones were very popular much before the advent of smartphones. There is a certain specialty of these phones which is why they still seem to be a souvenir for some people who feel they are an irreplaceable lot. LG joins Apple, Google, and Samsung, launches own mobile payment service

LG Mobile - Facebook The mobile payments arena is already crowded, but that's not stopping LG. The consumer electronics giant has announced LG Pay, the company's own mobile payment system that will likely enable its customers to complete purchases using only their smartphones. LG has partnered with South Korean credit card issuers Shinhan Card and KB Kookmin Card, which are probably two unfamiliar names if you live outside of that country. It's not surprising that LG will roll out the service in its home country first. There's no word on how comprehensive the rollout will be, but it's likely we will have to wait a bit to see LG Pay in the US or Europe. LG did the same thing with the launch of the Watch Urbane with LTE connectivity. The cellular-powered smartwatch launched in South Korea earlier this year, and now it's just beginning to come to the US as 2015 comes to a close. If LG Pay ends up launching in other countries, it would join the likes of Apple P

Leaked pictures of a Samsung device show a smartphone in a flip phone body

The clamshell body stands out like a sore thumb against the dual AMOLED displays. Clamshell phones are a fond memory from not too long ago. It was a simpler era, with T9 dictionary autocorrects, MMS messages, and furiously hitting the back key when you accidentally started up your GPRS connection. And Samsung is trying to bring back some of that old-school charm in a....questionable way.  The smartphone giant has slapped smartphone hardware into a flip phone casing, and it's ready to launch it in Asia sometime (likely) next year. Leaked from TENAA, the Telecom Equipment Certification Center in China, the new device currently goes by the name product name SM-W2016. It looks deceptively like a Samsung Galaxy S6 in a clamshell but don't let that deceive you, there's some quality hardware underneath. The phone will run on Android 5.1.1and has dual 4G capability. It packs a 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC with 3GB RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage. The phone has a 16MP re

Samsung Galaxy S6 Clamshell: A Flip phone with Exynos 7420 SoC, 3GB RAM and 16MP camera

Despite the inception of large touchscreen devices the popularity of flip phones is still on the high in China and South Korea. So much so that even Samsung is being reported to bring out a flip version of their present flagship - Samsung Galaxy S6 Clamshell. This isn't the first time for Samsung though. Previously the company have tried their hands on a 'smart' flip phone. Very recently a report emerged stating that the company is working on a device dubbed the Galaxy Golden 3. Samsung offers teens free vacation, as long as they...go on, guess

Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives. What will she decide? What should she decide? Please decide which you think this is. It's an ad produced by Samsung's French arm. It ran in May. However, as Adweek reports, it's just won a gold EPICA advertising award, in which tipsy journalists, rather than ego-addled creatives, are the judges. The ad has a simple premise. It puts young people -- all owners of a Samsung Galaxy A smartphone -- into strange rooms with one-way mirrors and a TV screen. Then, on behalf of Samsung, an enticing offer is made. Would the kids like to go on the vacation of their dreams? It shall be theirs. Oh, with one little condition. Samsung Galaxy A

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note 5 smartphones vulnerable to call snooping: Security

It was previously speculated that Samsung may unveil its new flagship smartphone sometime in early January. This means that any information sent, or received, from that phone first passes through the base station. Let us know what developments you want to or expect to see in the new Samsung Galaxy S7, and which features you want Samsung to improve upon or upgrade as well. This was during the Mobile Pwn2Own competition in which both the researchers showed how phones like the Samsung Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 Edge, and the Galaxy Note 4 were flawed. "The Galaxy S7 could be a slightly larger device than its predecessor, boasting a 5.7" flat or curved screen with QHD resolution. It's too tough to tell, but it could have a metal frame and glass back as well. This device is also presumed to have an upgraded version of the 3D Touch functionality that can be now experienced in Apple's iPhone 6S devices. The smartphone may also sport two different screen s

What is the perfect Android smartphone?

Technology is infiltrating every aspect of our lives. The majority of us would agree that it's a great thing. Advances in technology and automation have made tasks easier and more cost effective. Technology brings us together by making it easier and cheaper to communicate across short and vast distances. A short time ago it was incredibly costly to talk to a family member in another country on the phone, and just a little before that, it wasn't all too uncommon to write letters by hand. Heck, I bet some of you remember paying extra money just to talk to relatives in another state – on a landline. We've moved into a time of where you don't need to keep as much information in your head. Memorization becomes less of a necessity when you can pull a computer out of your pocket, ask it a question, and it returns the answer you're looking for in seconds. Only a few years ago we were relying on dictionaries, maps and encyclopedias for guidance or answers to important

ARM Unveils Cortex-A35 SoC for Low-Cost Smartphones

The company is aiming the chip design at entry-level devices for what officials say is the next billion smartphone users. Samsung Preparing To Launch Its Galaxy Golden 3 Flip Android Smartphone

So take these details with a grain of sand until the phone is made official by Samsung. According to TENAA, the flip features internal and external 3.9-inch screens, both with a 768 x 1280 resolution. The SM-W2016 has been certified in China by regulatory agency TENAA. While there might be no such thing as a free lunch, free swag definitely does exist-if you're interested in buying a Samsung Galaxy phone, that is. However, it certainly looks plausible that this is the Samsung Galaxy Golden 3 and that it's getting closer to a launch. The GFX Bench database listing included a 4.6-inch HD display, but we often point out that benchmark listings are not always 100% accurate. That's most likely an error as GFXBench does report wrong specs sometimes. Also, Samsung Galaxy Golden 3 will pack a 16-megapixel camera in the back, while in the front it should feature a secondary 5-megapixel selfie camera. The powerful CPU is accompanied by 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, but

With this on the storage grounds, the new device would be offering onboard storage capacity of 32 GB memory,

Sprint offering a free year of Amazon Prime if you buy a Samsung smarpthone

DON'T MISS: Smartphones from 2013 that are still awesome two years later Throughout the entire month of November, Sprint is offering users a free year of Amazon Prime if they purchase a qualifying Samsung smartphone. Per usual, the devil is in the details, so it's not as if you can stroll in and pick up an outdated or entry level Samsung device and then bask in the glory of free two-day shipping. Qualifying devices for the promotion include the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, and the Galaxy Note 5. Still, that's about the only footnote worth mentioning as it pertains to this promotion. Google Reveals 11 Vulnerabilities In Samsung's Galaxy S6 edge

Good news is that eight out of the eleven have already been fixed. Google's Project Zero team has indeed had a busy month. The team that looks into finding vulnerabilities had a bit of competition with two teams cracking down on a not so normal candidate for speculation, the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge smartphone. On a normal day, the team usually delves into finding vulnerabilities on Google's own Nexus hardware. The Project Zero team suddenly decided make it into a hackathon of sorts and the results were indeed impressive. The teams found about 11 vulnerabilities on one single Samsung smartphone. Mind you, this is just one OEM (original equipment manufacturer) device among the thousands on sale out there. And all eleven of those vulnerabilities were big ones. Another angle to this research would be that most of its vulnerabilities were the result of Samsung's customisations to the stock Android firmware. So in short manufacturers tweaking Google's AO
