Samsung's Smartphones Falter as Rivals Circle

Samsung's continued domination of the smartphone niche is facing a major scare from other quarters in the industry. For a long time, the technology company has dominated the smartphone niche, but that edge seems to be losing its leverage over the rest of the players in the market. Indeed, the latest statistics show that Samsung (SSNLF) has lost traction against rivals such as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), whose iPhone devices are selling steadily and HTC (HTCXF), whose owners are looking to acquire a respectable market segment. In the second quarter of this year, Samsung reported that its net profit fell by 8% from the values recorded last year. In the three months that ended late June, Samsung rerecorded 5.75 billion dollars in profits. This is a significant drop from the previous year's numbers ($6.25 billion) and a marked deviation from what the market had forecast. Samsung's mobile division was one of the hardest hit areas, recording a whopping 37.6% drop from figures re

Samsung suffers as smartphone sales drop

Electronics giant Samsung has reported net profit of £2.9bn for the second quarter of 2015, £0.5bn less than the £3.41bn it reported for the same period the year before. Sales in its mobile division were £1.4bn, which is £100m less than in 2014. The company stated that it would be making a "strategic adjustment" to the price of its high-end S6 model and would be launching new large-screen devices. According to the BBC, sales of the S6 smartphone fell short of expectations because the company could not meet the demand for its flagship model. At the same time, rival Apple has been gaining ground. The firm recently reported a strong quarter ending 27 June 2015, driven by record sales of iPhone and Mac, record revenue from services and the launch of Apple Watch. According to analyst IDC, Samsung is the largest smartphone maker, with 24.6% market share, 6.3% ahead of Apple. But it remains second, behind Apple, in terms of tablet shipments. Samsung Q2 Profit Down 9% On Weak Smartphone Sales

South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SSNLF) on Thursday reported a 9 percent year-over-year decline in second-quarter profit, reflecting continued weakness in its flagship handset business. However, sales for the quarter came in slightly above Samsung's guidance released earlier in the month, while operating profit was in line with the guidance. Looking ahead, Samsung said that while the second half of 2015 is expected to present "mounting challenges", it will try to improve earnings. Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung has now reported its seventh consecutive quarter of earnings drop amid the continued slowdown in its core smartphone business as it grapples with increased competition. However, it has seen sequential growth in operating profit amid improved sales at its chip business. Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker by shipments, is continuing to lose market share of its flagship handset business to U.S. rival Apple, Inc. (AAP

Samsung introduces first 16MP camera sensor with 1.0 micron pixels for smartphones

Home » News, Samsung Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of industry's first 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor (S5K3P3) with 1.0ÎĽm-pixel size for high-end smartphones. This is smaller than the 1.12 micron-pixel based 16-megapixel sensor such as Sony IMX240 in the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge and Samsung's own S5K2P8 sensor on the Galaxy S5. The 1.0ÎĽm-pixel-based image sensor measures only about 5mm high, about 20 percent thinner than current 1.12 micron-pixel based 16MP sensors, hence it has minimal camera protrusion without compromising on resolution, says the company. This uses Samsung's proprietary ISOCELL technology that dramatically reduces crosstalk of photons between pixels by 30 percent and has a 20 percent wider chief ray angle, allowing pixels to collect more light so as to capture colors more precisely. The new Samsung 5K3P3 camera sensor will be available for OEMs starting today. This 16MP sensor is likely to be introduced in the u

New Samsung monitor wirelessly charges your smartphone

Samsung Electronics has announced a monitor which comes with a wireless charging pad to charge your smartphones while the monitor is on. The Samsung SE370 monitor has been announced in Korea and there are no pricing details out yet. The promise of wireless charging has always been an exciting one, but a standalone charging pad, connected to a power source via a wire, still has one wire too many. Having wireless chargers integrated into devices that normally reside on your desk is a far more convenient application of the technology. The Samsung SE370 comes in the 23.6-inch and 27-inch display sizes and will come with the full HD resolution. This is an industry first and the base stand of the monitor will have an integrated wireless charging station. The only catch is that your phone should be supporting the Qi wireless charging standard, developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and is supported by phone makers such as Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC and Huawei. The SE370 is a

New leaked images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Is the back panel removable?

The two most important questions to most Samsung Galaxy Note fans who are awaiting the next iteration are: 1. Is there a removable battery? 2. Is there a MicroSD card slot? The Samsung Galaxy Note line is easily the most functional Android device. Not only was it the phone that pioneered larger screens, it also is the only phone to implement a stylus that actually works well. I'm a huge proponent of the Galaxy Note line as it always sets the stage for phones the following year. The Note typically comes with the fastest processor of the year, as next generation processors are typically announced and released in the 1st half of the calendar year, giving the Note ample time to integrate the new processors, since the Note is released in the second half of the year. Not only does it come with the latest processor, but it usually is the phone that ups RAM standards as well as display standards. So it is safe to say, many people look forward to the Samsung Galaxy Note release

Huawei Technologies' first-half smartphone revenue more than doubles in China

By Yimou Lee and Gerry Shih HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] more than doubled its China smartphone revenue in the first half of 2015, defying a slowdown in the world's biggest handset market that is enveloping rivals Xiaomi Inc [XTC.UL] and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS>. The fourth-largest smartphone maker globally missed shipment targets for two years, but a focus shift to high-margin premium models pushed January-June worldwide shipments to 48.2 million phones, Huawei said on Wednesday. That puts it on course to move 100 million mobiles this year, 33 percent more than last. The turnaround comes almost three years after Shenzhen-based Huawei decided to shed its budget appeal and challenge Samsung and Apple Inc at the high-end of the market, where analysts said an increasing number of previously price-conscious Chinese consumers are willing to spend their mo

Apple, Inc. and Samsung Are Teaming Up Against a Common Enemy

It's no secret that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung (NASDAQ Other:SSNLF) are bitter mobile enemies. The two compete the most in the competitive smartphone space, where they both have earned bragging rights. Apple is riding high with its most successful iPhones to date, selling a record number of units in fiscal Q1 2015 and seeing record smartphone revenues in China, its largest market. Meanwhile, Samsung has retained its worldwide largest smartphone vendor title, outselling all other phone makers, except for the quarter directly after the iPhone 6 launched (You can't win 'em all!). But Samsung's mobile profits have been beaten down by Apple's success as of late, and a few missteps with the latest Galaxy S smartphones have left the company struggling to find its footing again. That's why the news that Samsung and Apple are working in collaboration to help develop an embedded SIM (or, eSIM) card standard may come as somewhat of a surprise. The Financial Times

All About Samsung has released photos purporting to show a "dummy" store display unit of Samsung's Galaxy S6 Edge+, the super-sized version of its flagship curved smartphone. Specs are currently unclear, but the size appears on par with the Note 4 — only with no stylus, removable battery or SD card. Currently, the rumor is that it could sport 3GB of RAM and the same eight-core Exynos 7420 chip as the regular S6 Edge. The Edge+ is also expected to pack a 2560 x 1440 Super AMOLED display in (perhaps) 5.7 giant inches. These specs will make the Edge+ basically a larger version of the existing phone. It could be a challenger to the iPhone 6 Plus and the forthcoming 6S. FCC

New Moto G (2015) Renders Show New Smartphone From Different Angles

New 3D renderings of the upcoming Moto G (2015) from Motorola shows the mid-range smartphone will be thicker than most people would like.(Photo : Steve Hemmerstoffer) Serial smartphone leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, otherwise known by his more popular Twitter handle @OnLeaks, has published new 3D renders of a device that could possibly be the next Moto G 2015. Published via NowhereElse.fr, the images are not actually official Motorola renders. Instead, @OnLeaks says these renders were created for an accessories maker, but he suggests that they are probably "not too far from the truth." Based on the renders, it appears that the next-generation Moto G will not look any more different from its predecessor. The upcoming smartphone, if the render is indeed close to the truth, retains the same lines and curves Motorola is known for, particularly the signature Motorola dimple with the firm's M logo on the back of the phone. Also similar to the Moto G (2015), this new

Samsung might advance the launch of Galaxy Note to take on Apple’s iPhone

Samsung Electronics Co is bringing forward the launch of a key premium smartphone model, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday, as the South Korean tech giant seeks to revive sales after a sluggish second quarter. The world's top smartphone maker will launch a new version of its Galaxy Note phablet in mid-August, the person said, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. Previous versions, such as the Note 3 and 4, typically launched in September. A Samsung spokeswoman declined to comment. The mid-August launch will likely put the new Note smartphone model on the market ahead of arch-rival Apple Inc's next iPhones. The U.S. company is preparing for its largest initial production run for new phones so far by the end of the year, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week. Samsung is seeking to rebound from a disappointing 2014, when its annual profit hit a three-year low as smartphone earnings slumped. Though Samsung'

Disappointing Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone sales hit company's profit goal

Posted on: 10:32 AM IST Jul 07, 2015 Seoul: South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Tuesday guided for weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings, as a supply shortage plagued its latest smartphone launch and tepid demand from key markets likely undercut sales. The guidance suggests that Samsung, while on a gradual recovery path, will struggle to replicate the explosive growth it recorded at the turn of the decade as smartphone competition intensifies and demand softens in China and Europe. Samsung's annual profit is expected to rebound this year, but its shares have languished in recent months amid doubts about sales of its new Galaxy S6 smartphones. Operating profit for the second quarter likely fell 4 per cent from a year earlier to 6.9 trillion won ($6.13 billion), Samsung said in a filing, its best profit in four quarters but also the seventh straight period of annual decline. The average forecast from a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S survey of 39 an

Hell hath no fury like China facing bloatware: Chinese agency sues Samsung and Oppo

Sure, the preloaded software that comes standard on most phones can be something of a nuisance. I can't count the number of times I've tried to delete an app I never use to make space for something much more personally pertinent. But I've never gotten annoyed enough to bring a lawsuit against the phone maker. That is where the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission and I differ. The Chinese agency is taking Samsung and Oppo to court over the bloatware the companies load on their phones. The Commission claims that the multitude of these apps (44 on a Samsung Galaxy and 71 on an Oppo Find 7a) unreasonably detract from the amount of storage space advertised to consumers. According to the lawsuit, buyers were not made aware of the preloaded applications that would come standard with their phone. And because there are no instructions on how to remove these apps (another sore subject for the Commission), consumers often face large data usage bills as a result of the u
