Smartphones like Apple, Samsung turn smarter in 2015, gear up for 4G ride in 2016

In December last year, the government had set up a joint task force, which included industry representatives from Samsung, Microsoft and Lava, to rejuvenate nation's mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem with a view to achieve production of 500 million units of mobile handsets by 2019. With smartphones turning smarter every passing day, it is the domestic players and new Chinese entrants to the market that continued to challenge global giants like Apple and Samsung in 2015 and the New Year can be much more exciting with the expansion of 4G services. Emerging as a big force in the global smartphones market during 2015, India saw about 75 million devices being shipped in the first three quarters of the year. The pace of the blistering growth was further strengthened by the online channel as many handset makers added eCommerce only devices. The strong pace is expected to help India replace the the US as the second largest market globally, after China. "Smartphones

Samsung Pay plans to enable US online shopping in 2016

CHICAGO - Samsung Electronics Co plans to expand its fledgling mobile payment service in the United States next year, allowing users to shop online and with more smartphones that support the electronic wallet. Lower-priced Samsung phones will likely start offering the mobile wallet "within the next year," Thomas Ko, global co-general manager of Samsung Pay, said in an interview. The service debuted in South Korea on just a handful of high-end Samsung phones, including the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6, and S6 Edge Plus. Wider "handset availability of Samsung Pay as well as online payment support is coming soon," he said late last week. He did not comment on which other countries Samsung Pay would expand to. Samsung Pay has already scored a lead over its major rivals Apple and Android, by launching its US service on Sept. 28 with technology that is widely used at most stores. LG Display, Samsung Display to supply OLED screens for iPhones: Report

SEOUL: South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd and the panel-making unit of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will supply organic light emitting diode (OLED) screens for Apple Inc's iPhones, the Electronic Times reported on Wednesday citing unnamed sources. The report comes after years of speculation that Apple will start using the next-generation technology in its phones. OLED screens are thinner and offer better picture quality than the mainstay liquid crystal display screens. Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported last month that Apple plans to start using OLED screens for iPhones starting in 2018. LG and Samsung Display are close to a final agreement with Apple for the screens, the Electronic Times report said, adding the two Korean firms plan a combined 15 trillion won ($12.8 billion) in capital expenditure to build up OLED production capacity over the next two to three years. Apple will likely provide some funding to both firms to help with the investments, the paper added. LG Display

Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update to Improve Edge Interface on Samsung Phones: Report

A new video claimed to show the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with an overhauled edge panel functionality has been uploaded on YouTube. As seen in the 2-minute long video, the apps in the Edge Screen v1.0.52 of the Galaxy S6 Edge are divided in to two categories - Edge Feeds and Edge Panels. While the Edge feeds apps are for taking a quick look at the useful information from different apps, the Edge panels add more functionality to the curved display, making more use of it than before. Some new apps such as My Apps to access recently used apps, Task to access commonly used apps, Quick Tools, S Planner, Weather, Twitter trends, Yahoo, and Sports were also found running on the curved panel of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow-based Galaxy S6 Edge. All of them can be seen as user swipes from the right of the smartphone display. Although Samsung has not yet brought latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to any of its Galaxy smartphones, this video suggests that i

The Cases for Galaxy S7 Are Appearing Before the Actual Smartphone

The cases for Galaxy S7 are appearing before the actual smartphone. The newest information about Samsung's upcoming device arrives from the case producers that are providing a series of low-priced items for the upcoming phone. These cases are covered around allegedly dummy Galaxy S7 gadgets, and the pictures are in line with past leaks of the company's leading phone. Even if the cases have a very low cost for general distribution, the design and production needed for these items is anything but inexpensive. Developing cases for various unreleased mobile phones is a bet regarding their actual physical features. Since these cases' style adds up to the leaked images that permitted CGI sketches of the Samsung Galaxy S7, it gives them more reliability in the eyes of the users. It is unlikely that the producer would invest in tool manufacturing based on just one source. This also confirms previous speculations that the new S7 series will follow Samsung's existing st

The CUBOT H1 Smartphone Test: A Month with 3-4 Days of Battery per Charge

The last time I fully road tested a smartphone, I was moving from a rather decrepit Samsung Galaxy S2 to the 'glorious' 6-inch HTC One max, at a time when my smartphone use case consisted of taking pictures and basic gaming. Two years on, and I'm upgrading again, because the One max has become frightfully slow and I now use my phone a lot for writing reviews on the road. My phone of choice for this next round comes from a whimsical tale but is an obscure number, from a Chinese company based in Shenzhen called CUBOT.  My search for a smartphone to replace the One max has taken the best part of a few months, on and off. The drive to an upgrade came from a number of factors - the phone was a PVT sample, which means I was stuck on Android 4.3. The camera suffered from the famous 'purple haze' effect that was a result of damaged signal amplifiers in the early HTC One models from the Zoe software. Also the way I used my phone, due to new apps in my repertoire like E
